Day 4: Dress Up
Eddie thought for sure he'd get the upper hand this time. Get Steve all flustered and stammering, dressing up in that old Scoops uniform of his.
What he hadn't expected (but was no less thankful for) was Steve to go absolutely feral at the sight.
To the point that he wanted a little photographic memento at the end of it all to remind him of the state he had left Eddie in.

“And you know what, it’s a real shame, okay?” Eddie continues, pointing at him accusingly “It’s a fucking good book.”
Steve looks like he’s holding back a smile, “How do you know I haven’t already read it?”
And well, Eddie hadn’t even considered that.
“Have you?” He asks, purposely not looking at Steve.
Steve opens his mouth, but nothing comes out for a second. Eddie rolls his eyes, emptying the dustpan into a trash bin.
“No, it’s just-...” Steve rushes.
Eddie raises his eyebrows, looking over expectantly as he ties the trash bag closed.
“I- um…” Steve cringes at himself, takes a deep breath before continuing, “I…wrote it.”
Eddie barks out a laugh almost instantly, “Yeah, okay.”

Jeff and Doug were now both watching the pair closely. Trying to pick apart the interaction and understand how two entirely different people could possibly mesh so well. "You remembered?” Eddie looked over at Steve. Jeff was studying his face. His eyes were glossed over and massive. Like he was in disbelief that Steve had remembered something he said. “Of course I did Eds.” Steve answered like it was the most natural thing in the world. Like he had a bank in his brain full of things Eddie had said. "Thank you.” Eddie’s smile was genuine. The same smile Gareth wiped off his face earlier that day.

There's only one specialty clinic in Hawkins. As such, freaks and darlings alike end up in the same waiting room. Eddie is being fit for prosthetics after losing his right arm and leg. Billy is being examined for a surgery related to his hearing loss. Steve is just watching Eddie make a fool of himself trying to win Billy over...and in the process, Eddie starts to win him over, too.

“I’m just saying, objectively, I look better than those metalhead pricks,” Steve declared, gesturing at himself like he was on stage, showing off dramatics that had rubbed off on him from being in close proximity with Munson for too long. Steve’s leather jacket creaked from the gesture against the side of the car.
Robin didn’t even glance up from the passenger mirror. “You mean Munson. Again.”
Steve made a face. “Don’t say his name. He always seems to sense it. He might just pop out of a bush.”
“Oh please,” Robin rolled her eyes “You have had every class with him since pre-school, you’re practically married now.”Steve gave her a horrified look.
“Yeah, well, if he’s my husband, I want a divorce. And his guitar.”
Before Robin could tease him any further, tires squealed. A Camaro roared into the lot, drowning out the chatter with screaming guitar. Steve’s jaw clenched at the music.
“Oh not another one,” He groaned, barely audible over the music. But Robin did hear and snickered at his plight.
Then the driver stepped out.

Steve took in the scene; Eddie’s hair in a rat’s nest of a bun, green grass stains down Gareth’s shirt and, somehow, Freak’s hands. He walked toward Eddie who was, for some reason, keeping the island between them.
“Ok, Eddie, what’s going o- ahhhhn!” he stumbled back, throwing an arm in front of Robin, pushing her back from the giant shaggy green monster in his kitchen. “Eddie! What is that?!”
It looked like a dog, but Steve had seen creatures that were dog shaped not-dogs before, so he wasn’t taking chances. The dog creature panted, tongue lolling, and walked up to Steve, snuffling at his sleep pants. Steve held very still.

“Might got somethin’ to make swallowin’ that a lil’ easier.” He ventures, and he knows it don’t fix everythin’, maybe not even a single thing, but he hopes, as he lays those tickets in Ed’s open hand, it might make it all a little brighter.
“The Stanley Cup?” Ed’s voice is a hush, and Wayne shrugs.
“Somethin’ like that.” He had to pick a couple—several—many—extra shifts up at the plant, but Wayne’s not counting. He’d do it a thousand times over.
Eddie’s lip wobbles again before he’s throwing his arms around Wayne’s neck, climbing into his lap. “Thank you,” Eddie mumbles, his nose wedging against Wayne’s neck. “For…everything.”
