"Tell me what to do," he pleads, voice raw. "I need you to-" his voice cracks and he tries again. "Just- take it. All of it. The noise, the- the fucking-" he gestures vaguely at his own head, frustration twisting his features. "I can’t even think right. I just need to- to not think at all. Need you."
Aaron goes very still. Robert can feel the shift, the way the air changes between them, charged with something old and familiar. Aaron knows exactly what Robert’s asking, he doesn’t need it spelled out. They’ve done this before. Just- not in a long time.
Robert had lost so much while he was in prison, including his sense of control. Nothing was up to him when he was there, and a lot wasn't when he came out either. Since getting back together they have mostly stuck to less intense sex, Robert being afraid to give up control again, needing to be in control himself.

As nice as a vacation is, it's not enough to stop Robert from having a bad day. When he does, Aaron is all too happy to help him get out of his own head.

Summary
It’s over. It had taken a while, but it’s over. The police had found Mackenzie, and both he and Aaron are recovering in hospital. They’ve still got a long road left to go, but they’re alive, which is the most important thing. No one really knew where John had gone off to, but with the amount of police presence in the village and the surrounding areas in the days after the whole thing went down, everyone assumed he had done a runner and was probably somewhere on the continent by now.
Typical, Robert thinks. John had always been a slimy one, just slippery enough to not get caught, so it doesn’t really surprise him that his brother had avoided police capture. But he comforts himself with the fact that he would never have to lay eyes on John ever again, and is perfectly fine with forgetting he’d ever existed to begin with. He already had a complicated relationship with one brother, he didn’t need another one.
After the gorge debacle, Robert is ready to move on from everything related to his so-called brother and pull the tatters of his life back together. Unfortunately, things have never been that simple.

[D laughs again. “Kept you with him didn’t it? I mean yeah it’s insane but he didn’t die did he? I probably would have.” He nods like he’s really thinking about it. “Like stabbed too hard and hit something. He’s lucky he didn’t.”
Everything sort of stops suddenly. Aaron’s pretty sure Kerry walks in with Jacob and Eric, one of them laughs, then someone asks something about the specials on today. Aaron barely registers it. All he does is stare at the look on D’s face, the way he goes to take a sip of his pint and then stops halfway like he’s confused by the reactions around him.
Robert’s eyes are wide and red suddenly. “What?”]

Summary
It’d been touch and go, Andy told him when Robert finally picked up the phone, but he’d made it. There hadn't been much else to say given the resentment still clinging to them at the time, but Robert had taken annual leave and headed back to Emmerdale, sat around the kitchen table as Vic cried on his shoulder and Diane fussed and Annie called from a bad connection in Spain, and braved himself to see his dad for the first time in three years.
In typical Jack Sugden fashion, he’d barely reacted to Robert’s presence, taking it as a given, and Robert had bitten his tongue and tried not to scream.
[Or: Robert's home for the weekend, which would be fine if they were a normal, healthy family.]
