“Come in?” Grace called out, unintentionally making it sound like a question.
The door creaked open, a man poking his head in. He glanced around the room before his eyes finally landed on Grace. “Sorry to interrupt, but I’ve gotta lock up soon.”
“Oh!” Grace stiffened slightly, smiling apologetically. He began to cram his things into his bag with a little more urgency. “Yes! So sorry, I was just packing up. Give me a few seconds and I’ll be out of your hair.”
“No rush,” The other responded evenly, opening the door fully. A dog’s furry little head poked out from between his legs when he did. “Looks nice in here.”
“Thank you! It’s amazing what a few hours and some tape can do.” Grace chuckled, trying not to look too delighted by the pup’s surprise addition. “I’m Grace, by the way. I’m taking over for Professor Dubois while he’s on sabbatical."
“Simon,” The man said in response before looking down at his companion. “And this is Laika.”
OR

Well. That settled it. This man was either fucking stupid, or he was the most kind hearted person that Simon had ever met. Deep down, he had a feeling he already knew which one.
He looked up at Ryland with heavy, drooping eyelids to see hair sticking out in every direction, glasses askew, and a big cozy sweater swallowing his frame. Cute.
If Simon didn’t watch himself, he was going to be in big fucking trouble. As his eyes fluttered closed, he also got the sense that it was already too late.

Ryland looked down at his clipboard, where he had written a reasonable script, supplied earlier that day by Adrian. Unfortunately, the moment his eyes landed on the words, his brain supplied only terrible ways to say them.
He chose the worst one.
“I need flowers with prominent reproductive structures.”
The man went completely still.
Ryland could feel his soul attempting to leave his body.
“For a plant anatomy lab,” he added quickly. “For my students. Middle school students. Not–” He cut himself off, because there was simply no end to that sentence that would improve his situation. Instead, he just weakly smiled, and added “Science.”

“Simon?” Grace tries out the name, the syllables rolling of his tongue. To his surprise, Simon looks up. He looks scared and confused, regardless of how harsh his bark may come off or unnatural his eyes are. Grace longs to help him.
“Can you c’mere, please? So I can show you proof I’m not lying to you?” Grace asks with a new wave of patience. Simon looks away and doesn’t move, choosing to glare at the wall.
“I don’t bite,” Grace reassures.
“What if I do?” Simon warns, tone too soft to be threatening.
Grace sits down with a grunt, crisscrossed on the floor from where he stood with the laptop settled on his lap.
“Then that’s a risk I’ll just have to take.”

Ryland Grace has been living happily on Erid the past year, or so he believes. He loves his comforts and small wins of his everyday, but when he’s alone it feels as though something’s missing.
Maybe this hard around the edges and mysterious stranger, the only human he’s made contact with in years, will become a friend.
Maybe something more, as his foolish soft heart always holds onto hope.
