if it wasn’t the arcanum, it would’ve been the furious, mad way she insisted at every hour to scrub feverishly at her hands, the determined line to which her lips were chronically set, the harsh glare in her utterly unremarkable flat brown eyes. mesmer didn’t know for sure if those examples were borne from, or were existent without the arcanum. it didn’t really matter. she didn’t have to ask to know, for as true as her lineage, her nature, the immovable, immutable way the world worked, it was well known to all.
mesmer jr. was an ill child.
therefore, she supposed that was the reason why, when she’d begun hacking up full blooms, spattered with blood and spittle; she’d not been half surprised.

Dutifully, Qiqi looks down and flips through the handwritten pages of her journal. Her daily checklist, her calisthenics, her herb reference guide – ah. There is her list of names and descriptions of people she's met. The important ones have small doodles of distinguishing features, and notes on time they have spent together. If Qiqi doesn't review them daily, or try very hard to keep them in her thoughts, it's like they cease to exist.
There's Dr. Baizhu and Changsheng. The Traveler and Paimon. Hu Tao, and routes to avoid her. And...
“Yaoyao,” Qiqi repeats, touching the small ink portrait on the page. Her best friend. She looks up, eyes round with surprise. “Yaoyao. Sorry. I forgot again. What were we doing?”

Branches strike at Qiqi's face, tearing her clothes and pulling her braid, but Hu Tao seems to flit right through them, gaining on her. She is laughing. Her laughter is an ugly, fake sound, taunting and cruel.
To Hu Tao, this is a fun game. How Qiqi despises her.

Humans can make out patterns out of nothing. Like discovering shapes in the cloud, or images between the stars. If you listen to static noise long enough they start to form meaningful words, even when there isn’t any.
This is the closest approximation to how Ichiji feels things.
It is almost fascinating, then, for him, to watch Sanji, who seems to feel everything with his entire being, so visceral and open and raw.

Kaeya chuckles, not bothering to look at Diluc. “Yes, you are.”
“I don’t even care enough to bother trying to fight with you.”
“You’re always trying to fight,” Kaeya tells him, and does not elaborate.
It’s not true. Like usual, Kaeya’s just talking out of his ass. Diluc is perfectly level-headed. Diluc is perfectly under control. Kaeya’s the one who needs to reign it in, who needs to get himself together, and Diluc would tell him exactly that—if he was looking for a fight. Which he is not.

When a simple mission in Dragonspine goes south and leaves Kaeya injured, it falls on Diluc to get both of them back home in one piece. If he manages not to murder Kaeya himself, of course.

He should have no space or time to think so much - more than usual - about his past.
Something about the sky in Morioh makes him feel watched. By who, or what, he doesn’t know - he has so many ghosts by now they could fill a theater as his audience, enemies and allies all together.

Somehow, when it's Tooth Fairy, he winds up feeling guilty about it. “Ms Tooth Fairy, if I may, do you not think the role of the final girl suits you?”
There's a much longer pause as Tooth Fairy seems to think over the question posed to her.
Tooth Fairy’s eyes land on his face, the sun is behind her now, but he can still see the pale glint of her brown eyes. “I do not know many horror films, Horropedia. But I assume the final girl survives the events of the film." Her hand rises to run her fingers over her braces, "simply, I think you are overestimating me.”
Horropedia considers the distance between himself and Tooth Fairy.
