Summary
The kids keep calling him a merman - but he doesn't look like any cartoon or kids picture Steve's ever seen. His tail is too flat, for one, definitely more like an eel, plus there's no fins that Steve can see, the tail just ends in a rounded point.
Steve offers him a handful of peas, carefully cupping them until fish guy has his hands cupped underneath, ready for them to be tipped in. They don’t touch, and Steve vaguely wonders if the guy will feel cold from the water. The skin of his fingers isn’t pruned like a regular persons would be, which makes sense since he’s a fish guy.
Maybe he’ll feel clammy, or rubbery. Or scaly. Steve can very vaguely remember petting a stingray in a low tank at the aquarium once, surrounded by other kids. Might have been a field trip or something, but he can remember how surprised he was by the feeling of the mottled brown skin. Super rough, like sandpaper. Fish guy doesn’t look like he’ll feel like that either, though.

Summary
“Good. Let’s get out of here.” He says and is plunged straight into a nightmare.
There’s a blur of motion at his shoulder as he turns. The flash of talons graze by his head; a whip of wind blows back his hair and clothes and sends him tumbling onto the hard-packed dirt.
“Owl!” the cry rips from his throat as he forces himself onto his feet in panic. He catches a glimpse of Tommy’s startled, scrunched face as he falls backward in the cold, white ash, charcoal cast aside as his face tips upward in horror at the creature standing over him, wings spread wide.
“Tommy!”
Wilbur whips his pack off his back and throws it at the bird’s back. “Get away from him!” he screams. “Don’t touch my brother!” He scrambles at the rocks, trying to boost himself over. If he can just get there, he can fight it off. He can save Tommy.
Predators are not merciful, and the owl is no exception.
Before Wilbur can get one leg over, Tommy screams. Wilbur screams with him, loud and anguished.
Just as suddenly as it appeared, the bird disappeared; Tommy clutched in its talons, arms outstretched.

He can practically feel Dream’s eyes roll behind the mask. “You’re safe enough here. You always complain that you want to come down anyway. Here’s the freedom you so desperately wanted. Enjoy it.”
That’s… that’s not what Tommy meant. And Dream knows it.
“Dream,” he whimpers. “Don’t leave me alone.”
The drider turns away, walking back in the direction they came. Without a glance back.
“Dream!” Tommy screams. He bolts forward, reaching out, so close-
The rope goes taut. Blue eyes widen as he chokes and flails, vision blackening for just a moment.
