Will held out his fingers to count off. “If the oxygenator breaks, I’ll suffocate. If the water reclaimer breaks, I’ll die of thirst. If the Hab breaches, I’ll like… implode, I think. And if somehow, none of that happens, I’m eventually gonna run out of food. So… yeah.”
His eyes were stinging again. It was one thing to note how hopeless the situation was in his head, but to say it out loud was depressing. Which was the understatement of the century. He blinked away the tears. Way to get it together.
“Um… Yeah.”
He was going to die on Mars, alone.

Summary

“Oh, come on,” Will says, struggling to keep his voice neutral in a different way. His mouth is dry, and he hates Mike for it even more. “Is this what it’s going to be like this summer?”
Mike looks back at him, considering, lips pursed in an effort to shut down the smirk that Will knows is fighting to break free. Will doesn’t dare to let his gaze catch there, focusing instead on holding Mike’s stare, because this, too, is a game.
Five years into a rivalry with bittersweet origins, the only thing Mike and Will want is to beat each other at this summer’s camp counselor competition. The man hovering over him leaned back, releasing Grian completely. Cold night air rushed in to fill the void.
“I guess it’s out in the open now,” the stranger hummed. “Shame. I wanted to avoid this.”
With the additional glow occupying the space between them, Grian was finally able to catch features that were lost in the prior darkness. His curiosity outweighed all else, and he drank them in greedily. As soon as he saw who sat across from him, alarms blared in his mind.
This man wasn’t a civilian, wasn’t even a hero.
“Hello, Doctor,” the villain mused. “You were quite the help today.”

“What?”
“How else could I get the chance to talk to you alone?” Will feels like the air was just knocked out of him. Of course Mike is joking, but there’s a hint of truth to the statement. He was looking for ways to get Will alone. Will isn’t sure whether this information excites him or terrifies him.
“You’re nutty,” Will says, physically shaking the worries from his head.
“Maybe so,” Mike says, “but it worked.”
