Summary
“Eds, how am I supposed to help you woo someone if I don’t even know who they are?”
“Come on, you’re so good at this stuff. You take me and Chris to all of these planned out adventures, and…” he trailed off there, clearing his throat.
Buck took that in, and took a moment to settle the weird flutter he had in his stomach. “Fine. But you have to tell me one thing about them. What do they like?”
“Reading. They, uh, They like reading.”
“Okay. I can work with that. What are you doing tomorrow?”
“Tomorrow?”
“Yeah, dude. No time like the present.”
“What are you going to do, give me lessons?”
“Eddie. This was your idea. If you’re not going to tell me who this person is,” and Buck heard it then, his continued use of gender-neutral words. He soldiered on. “Then I’ll just have to show you what a good date looks like.”
“You’re going to take me on a date?”
“Eddie, please keep up,” Buck said, a joking tone forced over real nerves, “I’m going to show you how to woo someone. That’s what you want, right?”
Eddie swallowed, audible in the otherwise quiet kitchen. “Right.”
“Great, then. Tomorrow it is.”

Summary
“Ugh,” Buck groaned concisely from the sweat-soaked spot on his bed. He listened to Eddie shuffling around the entryway, and could picture each of Eddie’s movements. He would toe off his shoes without bending down, left foot and then right. He would move into the kitchen, dropping his keys on the island, and drop a bag of food that he picked up on his way over. Even though Buck had no idea why Eddie was here this morning, he heard the confirmation of his predictable movements like a soothing symphony, and he already felt just the tiniest bit better. Buck heard the next movement — Eddie’s soft step on the stairs — and let himself fall back into his pillows.
“I’m sick,” Buck said, eyes closed, when he could sense Eddie reached the loft.
“I can see that,” Eddie said, a quiet laugh in his voice that did nothing to cover up the fondness. Buck cracked open one eye to look at his best friend.

“I actually don’t know how to skate,” Eddie admitted. He could feel more than he could see Buck’s soft smile.
“I guess I’ll just have to teach you, then.”

Summary
Two days later, Eddie arrived at the 118 again, and opened his locker door to find a surprise. There, the photo of Chris just where he had left it, and underneath — a post-it note. In large, untidy scrawl was a short phrase: “Super adorable. I love kids!” Eddie stared at it briefly, a little in shock. He hadn’t even remembered that he had forgotten the photo; and here was a bright and unsigned missive like a wave from a friend. He smiled bemusedly down into his locker, unsure what to make of it.

Summary
Last year, when Shane was only a freshman, he’d been the best player on the team. He’d been skating circles around the other players, even the seniors. Not that he would have ever admitted that to anyone, but he knew it was true.
This year, he's got big plans. He’s going to be even better. He’ll be top scorer. He’ll be voted captain. He’s draft eligible this year too, impossible not to think about.
None of these plans involve Ilya Rozanov.

Summary
This is what had always been most treacherous about the Forsaken One--people are usually acclimated to its presence, long before they’re sacrificed to it. Loneliness isn’t the experience of finding yourself the only person in an empty room. Most of the time, people feel loneliness like a habit. Sometimes, there’s no reason for it all.

Summary
When Buck had told them all the Hot Days, Smoldering Nights, Men of the LAFD Wall Calendar had selected him to represent the 118 for the month of July, Eddie hadn’t thought much of it. He’d congratulated him with a clap on the shoulder, laughed along with Hen, Chim, and Bobby’s good-natured teasing, and that had been that.
Well, Eddie certainly isn’t laughing now.

Summary
“And then he basically accused me of being in love with you, which was so ridiculous that I kicked him out,” Buck finally says, out of breath and flushed with terror. “Which was the right move, because that was crazy, right? Doesn’t that sound crazy?”
“What? Why?” Eddie asks over speakerphone, sounding not even a little horrified by the suggestion and in fact, more distracted than anything. “Wait, sorry, give me one second, I need to watch the recipe video.
