Summary
A decade ago, the answer would have slipped from Mel King’s lips without a second thought. But looking back at the wreckage of her past, she no longer has a simple answer. Armed with strict medical algorithms and a flawless professional mask, Mel has built a quiet life treating the traumas of strangers to avoid facing her own.
But tonight is about to become the worst shift of her career. Amidst the sterile chaos of a crowded ER, a critically injured patient is wheeled through the double doors. He is broken, bloody, and clutching her wrist with an agonizingly familiar grip.
Ten years of running, ten years of silence, and Mel is suddenly staring into the eyes of her patient—and her greatest nightmare: her father.

Summary
“How do you write to your friend?” Becca asks. “Do you text him?”
“No, we email.”
“Cool,” Becca says, smiling. “Can I read one?”
“No!” Mel says a little too quickly, and Becca looks up in surprise.
“Why?”
“Because it’s private,” Mel insists. “I don’t look at your messages to Adam.”
“But Adam’s my boyfriend,” Becca says. And then she gasps excitedly. “Is he your boyfriend?”
Mel starts a low-stakes and casual friendship over email. Of course, things get complicated.

Summary
"The ER can be a very, very overwhelming place…" After the mass casualty event, she hadn't meant to start counting the days. At first, it was incidental—a passive observation that a senior resident had simply vanished from the floor in all but name. She really hadn't meant to keep track that he was missing, or that Dr. Robby seemed surlier. That is, until he came back…three hundred and nine days later.

She pulled the straw of her boba up to her lips, the first sip tasted heavenly, enough to make her forget the nerves that bundled in her stomach.
“Mel… will you marry me?” He said softly, his eyes bright in her direction.
She spat her boba across the table at him. “What?” She screeched.Bookmarked by sarahtreshinsky

Summary
When he finds the courage to leave the comfort of her steam shrouded bathroom, he makes his way out to the living room.
He stops in his tracks when he hears her, a fond smile etching onto his face.
He’s careful to disguise his footsteps on the vinyl floor, not wanting her to stop. He was rapidly beginning to realize he could listen to her sing forever.
She flits around the kitchen, alternating between humming and singing along to whatever music played in her ear, and all Frank can do is watch.
“Oh!” She says with a jolt when she finally notices him, “Frank! How are you feeling? I made spaghetti…spaghetti’s okay, right?”
“Yeah.” He nodded, “Yeah, spaghetti’s okay.”
She shuffles out of the kitchen a few moments later with two bowls in tow, “We can sit at the table, the couch…whatever you’re most comfortable with. If you want we can put something on the TV, that’s what Becca usually likes to do…”
“I like when you sing.” He can’t stop the words from coming, and he doesn’t regret them one bit when he watches her face change shades if only slightly.
“Oh.”

Summary
Mel thought she knew all of Frank’s different voices — the professional one he uses when talking to his patients, the loving/worried/cajoling one he uses when talking to his kids, the soft one he uses just for Mel — but his voice sounds so different now, so much deeper and rougher. Mel didn’t know he could sound like that. Her mouth goes dry and she squeezes thighs together reflexively, pressing her ear harder against the wall.
OR:
The walls between Frank's and Mel’s apartments are very thin, leading to some interesting new discoveries.

Summary
“You should get back home to your wife,” she says carefully, slowly, like it’s a reprimand she doesn’t trust him to register as one unless she draws attention to it.
He pretends he didn’t hear her.
It’s only later, at the bus stop, that a firm sense of certainty washes over Frank for the first time in a very long time. He’d gotten it all wrong. Mel clearly has someone else to preoccupy herself with. It was embarrassing, really, to assume she would want a fuck up like him. At that moment, like the punctuation to some cosmic joke, the wedding ring he’s been fingering absentmindedly slips off his finger and skitters around in a circle between his feet. He crouches down to pick it back up as the last bus home flies past. He half wishes it had hit him; it probably would have hurt less than the realisation that he has feelings for Mel King, and she doesn’t feel the same way.
OR
Frank wants Mel so badly he's willing to fuck up his whole life to have whatever crumbs of her he can scrape together. The question is: how many people is he going to hurt on his way to her, and will he stop before she becomes one of them?

Summary
“Mel,” he says slowly, “if I texted you during a shift and said you are the most beautiful woman I’ve ever met, what would you do?”
I don’t know if I mean to give him a physical display of my answer, but I fall forward on my elbows, nearly knocking over my tea.
“Right,” he says. “So that’s issue number one.”
OR
After a small misunderstanding, Mel tells a lie she can’t take back, and now she has Langdon in her phone pretending to be her imaginary boyfriend. Maybe it would have been easier to just date the IT guy.
