Summary
On any normal day, Robby would be looking forward to handoff, to zipping up and walking home and turning off his brain for the evening.
But handoff, in this case, was the reason Robby was absolutely dreading the end of this shift. Handoff meant bringing the night shift attending up to speed on anything that had transpired over the course of his shift that would carry over into the next one. And this evening, just an hour and a half before he was due to get out of there, an intoxicated patient had assaulted a member of his staff.

Summary
Jack knows what it feels like when the world is ending.
The world has ended for Jack Abbot a dozen times over, and the sun still insisted on rising the next day, illuminating the city skyline, warming his tired face, and bringing in a new wave of patients.
That’s the only reason why, when he gets the phone call from Dana, he doesn’t immediately fall apart. He rolls out of bed, pulls on his leg, and returns to the emergency department that he left only four hours ago.
The first words out of Dana’s mouth are "She’s stable", god bless her.
“Where is she.”
“South twenty.”

Summary
Samira didn’t go out.
She worked around 60 hours a week, came home and slept, or sat on her futon reading journals until the words swam and her eyes burned. JAMA. NEJM. Anything that kept her mind occupied long enough to feel useful.
She told herself that it was enough.Lately, it hadn’t been.
Her mind had developed an annoying habit of drifting, usually when she was trying to focus on something important.
A line from a paper would blur, and she’d catch herself thinking about Jack. His gravelly voice, talking her through a procedure. The way he told her she’d done well, like it wasn’t just routine praise.
It made no sense to her. She tried to frame it as admiration. But it lingered, unhelpful and intrusive, like a symptom she couldn’t quite name.
So when Trinity texted drinks? followed by far too many emojis, Samira said yes before she could overthink it.

Samira has laid her body and her mind bare over the past ten months in the prolonged and total absence of the former senior resident and still, she is nothing compared to Frank Langdon in the eyes of Michael Robinavitch.

“You’re the smartest person I know in every room—but if you think I’ll have to pretend to have feelings for you, pretend like I’m fucking thrilled you chose me, then I will get on my knees right now and remind you that pretending is not necessary.”
Her stomach bottoms out, lips parting as his words sink in. Heat spreads through her body as her eyes flicker between his eyes and lips, voice light in a daze when she murmurs, “That’s not a bad idea.”
The corner of Jack’s mouth curves up. “Your mom’s right outside.”

Summary
She wants him so badly her teeth ache. She’ll never say it out loud. It will eat her alive. One day, when she dies and a pathologist cracks her chest (nipples to navel is no man’s land), they’ll see a heart calcified with the weight of these fatal fantasies. It would make an excellent case study, she thinks, ruefully. They’ll write articles about her– 29-year-old female, South Asian, presented as healthy but upon further examination, was deeply ill. Poor, poor Samira Mohan, besotted with her handsome, brooding, married attending. She died how she lived– desperate, wanting, and alone.

Summary
While it might be juicy gossip, who the emotionally unavailable widower of nearly two decades Dr. Jack Abbot is seeing on the sly, he's not the type to be the subject of such fodder. He warrants a sort of respect and awed intimidation from most of the staff that he isn't close with, even though Samira could tell very easily just how warm-hearted and dorky he is most of the time.
Except for right now, when he finally responds to her text with a simple Make sure you charge that tonight, sweetheart. I expect the proof I was promised. I'll be over by 7:30.
The message sends a rush of heat through her body, settling in her nether regions that she can't touch because of him. She could be bratty and say something about how she never technically promised him anything, how it's clearly a comment that he's taken to extreme levels of fantasy fulfillment, but. It's not like she was lying when she said it.
Samira just has a lot of time on her hands when she's not working, okay?

Summary
“Ok then, hear this,” she clears her throat dramatically, “46, attending physician, widower, former combat medic—”
The rest of the words are drowned out by the static noise Samira's brain is producing. Like a radio that has lost its frequency and is desperately trying to pick up a signal to continue broadcasting. If her heart had previously sunk into her stomach, it is now thudding wildly in her throat, where it had shot back up like a rocket.
Her ears expelled the cotton wool that had muffled them in time to hear, “Oh, that could fit Dr. Abbot’s description.”
“Mel you are as extremely smart as you are oblivious at times.”

Summary
Our little secret.
She expects it to be like most other things with Dr. Jack Abbot: a passing comment, a breath of exhilaration, a moment of feeling seen—really seen—before she washes it off in the shower with the lingering sweat and smell of antiseptic.
Until. Until a day or a week or a month passes, and she realizes it's hovering at her periphery, and she will wonder when it turned from nothing into something.

Summary
Samira was, in practice, the ED’s attack dog, and the attack dog of all the ED’s many and varied denizens. She was very good at her job, maybe because she looked so sweet and had such a reputation as a bleeding heart that no one expected her to be so fucking mean when the occasion called for it.
She was also, in practice, right now, like, while they all watched in frozen horror for the first twenty seconds of it happening, enduring a rare statistically significant loss - patient vs physician. She was, in this moment, leaning against the hub and bleeding through the gauze Dana and Robby were pressing against three different penetrating stab wounds on her anterior abdomen while Robby bellowed for a gurney and Dana hollered for security.

Summary
Samira is nothing if not a realist. She can accept, without rancor, that her feelings are hers alone, that they are not reciprocated and never will be. He’s her attending, he’s eleven years older than her – and, most importantly, she is nowhere near the caliber of woman that he deserves.
So she shouldn’t feel anything when he comes in one day, Al-Hashimi beside him, her hand resting on his back.

His face comes into focus then: hazel eyes watching her with an expression she doesn’t recognize, grey hair damp and curling.
“That’s it,” he says. “You with me?”
She nods, the movement slightly hindered by the hand still cupping her face. He leaves it there as he slides the other up to press two fingers to her carotid. She’s watched him perform miracles with these hands—has seen him blind cric a patient without an ounce of hesitation—but she realizes now that he is shaking.

A full smile blooms on Abbot’s face. “Dr Mohan, you have your own go-bag?!” He looks absolutely delighted as she rolls her eyes and reaches down to her backpack, fighting her own smile.
“You don’t get the goods if you make fun of me, Dr Abbot.”
His right hand moves from his leg to rest over his heart. His eyes dance at her as his features slip into a farcical mask of shock.
“Hey hey, woah woah, this is awe I’m giving you, baby!”

Summary
She has to say it. She has to say it, because the last time someone was rolled away from her on a gurney it was to the morgue. Brushing the pads of her thumbs over his cheekbones, Samira stoops until their foreheads touch, her lips ghosting over his.
“I love you,” she whispers, eyes wide open.
Jack’s mouth curves into a gentle smile.
“I know.”
