Summary
The man, dressed humbly in a simple black shirt, wears his hair just long enough to be tied back at the nape of his neck. He’s no young man, perhaps a decade younger than Lawrence himself at most, but his eyes possess a boyish lucidity.
It’s a sombre time; everyone wears a similar gloom in their eyes. But those who grieve with particular anguish recognise one another. It is the grief of mourning a man rather than a symbol.
Perhaps it is not so much recognition, but a quiet attraction—like a moth drawn to a flame.
(Years ago, Vincent Benítez resigned from his post after a surgery in Geneva. A month ago, Thomas Lawrence resigned as Cardinal Dean. Two strangers meet in Vatican City, following the death of the late Pope, grappling with grief, guilt, and sorrow—together.)

Bellini stared at him and Goffredo stared at the world reflected in those incredible eyes. He could barely hear over the rushing of blood in his own ears, his own misery, but shook his head slightly in time to catch the question. “And what - what do you want?”
And here, at the end of everything he thought he knew, everything he thought he believed, his whole world broken open, was something so impossibly simple. “Permettimi,” he said, without pretense, his voice unbelievably calm, and then he reached forward.
Friends, it's not canon to the book (not really even canonical to the movie) - I was inspired.
Can be read as a stand-alone but it's really a companion piece to "tutto, idiota, voglio tutto" and makes more sense if you read that first.Series

The kid is in his twenties, which is a relief, at least. Not technically a kid at all. He’d been expecting much worse. After all, the words that O’Malley had used danced neatly around the idea of a scandal. If it were any other cardinal, this wouldn’t be much of a scandal in the first place—so long as it didn’t get out, of course. But it’s just so… absurd.

Summary
Ex-libris: Latin for "from the books", often translated as "from the library of".
Without trying too hard, he could almost imagine the other man being decades younger, switching seamlessly from one project to the next. Perhaps Father Benítez had more of that person left in him than he seemed to think. Thomas watched the other man as he moved behind a table piled with stacks of printed volumes of different heights. He could still see him moving in between the gaps, a strange sort of mosaic. An incomplete picture, made no less interesting by the pieces still missing.
1926. The Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana is in a state of disarray. To initiate a process of modernization within the institution, Cardinals Aldo Bellini and Thomas Lawrence welcome Vincent Benítez, a mysterious priest from overseas.

He must think blowing out plumes of flavoured smoke makes him look attractive. “I always thought he had very beautiful blue eyes, our Tommaso. A fine face—one might think he is a continental man. Do you think he's kept to his vows of celibacy?”
“I'm sure he has,” Aldo says neutrally. Thomas is not an easy man to tempt.

But with Vincent Benítez's election cracking their world open, and the new Pope cutting away the old branches to make room for the new, both find that change is flooding in everywhere, mostly within themselves.
