‘Sure,’ Will says, a mix of sceptical and amused. ‘Um—thanks? I miss you too.’
The words send a restless flurry through Mike’s stomach, something that feels suspiciously like butterflies, or moths—justice for moths, okay—and it’s not so bad. The warmth that shoots through his body isn’t so bad, either, and even though it’s two days until winter starts, he’s now hot all over. Not necessarily in the itchy, humid way he gets during the summer, but a comforting way, like a warm blanket or a hug, and he—God, he misses Will.
Mike really needs to get a hold of himself over that.

And look. Look. Will is not, in any way, inherently brave. He does not throw himself in harm’s way to save people or run towards danger because that’s just stupid, okay, and he is not quick on his feet and does not think fast or have that one idea up his sleeve that, in one way or another, miraculously saves the day.
But he can be honest. Honest in a way that’s a . . . a little bit reckless—maybe even dangerous, almost. He can toe the line that splits whatever he can and can’t say or do, because that’s just Will, okay? He has things to say, and he’s spent too long saying and doing nothing, and he’s finally gotten Mike almost right where he wants him to be. Will thinks he gets to do something.
