Alicent got up and returned to the solar, where she found the letter. The uneven scrawl was a testament to how thoroughly this disease had ravaged her husband’s body. Though barely legible, Alicent could still decern the meaning. He once more begged Rhaenyra for a reconciliation, even though it was her own fault he had been forced to dismiss her claim to the throne and exile her from court. He asked after her bastard, and near the end he began to mention legitimizing him as a Targaryen.
What sort of hold did that girl have on him to make him write this, even though she had never written back in all sixteen years of her disgrace? He is not in his right mind, Alicent reasoned. Pain and sickness have addled his wits. Surely if he were healthier, he would understand what chaos and disaster this legitimization would bring. Rhaenyra would take it as proof that she was meant to be heir all along and fight to put herself and her bastard on the throne. Alicent’s children and grandchildren would be a risk.
She lowered the parchment to her candle and watched as the flames slowly devoured it.

Eddard Stark lost over half his family because of mine, and yet he will welcome me as his kin?” Her voice rose at the last, as she was no longer able to hide her disbelief, her fear.
“Ned Stark is a man of honor,” Stannis said. “He has no interest in avenging his family by tormenting you.” Unlike the king, neither of them said aloud.
