“The crib is built,” Ilya says, voice shaking now. “There’s a tiny mobile with woodland creatures hanging above it. The car seat is in the closet. It’s been so long, the nursery doesn’t even smell like paint anymore. We’re about to go into the most intense month of the year, and I don’t know how to hold both things in my hands without dropping one and shattering the other.”
It begins with small moments like glances that linger a second too long, the quiet realization that maybe they want more. When Shane & Ilya decide to adopt, they think they’re prepared for the waiting, the interviews, the scrutiny, the careful hope. But they aren’t prepared for how much of themselves it will ask for.

Over a decade prior, Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov's relationship kicked off in a nearly empty ice rink, surrounded by cameras and directors that wanted a piece of a rivalry that was sure to take the hockey world by storm for the foreseeable future, filming a commercial to promote their newfound stardom.
Now, out and safe, the topic comes up again, and a certain Ottawa social media manager (the GOAT Harris, of course) has the idea to revisit and recreate said commercial as a way to reminisce and bring the world back to the couple's roots.
TLDR: Shane and Ilya recreate the commercial that started the whole thing, albeit with a lot more love and a lot more nostalgia (+ The aftermath and onward).

Dropping hard onto the ice Shane clutched his knee as he lay on his side. He wanted to shout out in pain, maybe he was, everything seemed muffled except for the overbearing pain he could feel. Shane could tell Luca was near, probably trying to check on him, but FUCK was his knee hurting. And for god’s sake how long does it take for Terry to get out here.

Shane tears like half the ligaments in his knee and is forced into retirement. A man who’s whole life and identity has revolved around a sport now has to deal with that no longer being an option.

Chapter 17 is a deliberate rewrite of a key scene from The Long Game that I couldn’t live with as written.
