“I’ve got work,” Charlie repeated unhelpfully as he turned a page in his book, eyes glued to his notes.
“Nothing fun,” Lisa stressed, giving James and Louis a meaningful look. “So, because I’m a great friend, I said I’d help him go on a date after exams end.”
Charlie’s head snapped up at the same time as James’ did, both of them looking at Lisa in abject horror.
Her lips curled into a smirk at their overlapping “What?!”
or, instead of spending her lunch studying like Charlie, Lisa decides to set her friends up on a date (no need to thank her—though it would be appreciated).

Jon's been going about his life and his schooling the same way he always has — overworking himself to exhaustion and attempting to ignore the phantom pains he experiences (though there's one ache that always takes him out for the day, a blinding pain in his chest just above his heart that doctors have assured him is no cause for alarm).
One late night, while doing work for his literature course, something strange happens. He brushes it off, but when the same thing keeps happening, maybe Jon has to admit there's something going on.

“Of course.”
“Why didn’t you say? You didn’t mention it at all in those awkward ‘boundaries’ conversations early on. You just said, ‘obviously me being undressed is a no’ or something and moved on, I thought it was an ace thing!”
“Well I thought it was obvious!”

Summary
They’ve been having lunch together for two months when Martin asks, with enough stuttering that it takes Jon a moment to process his words, if Jon would like to get dinner with him.
Martin is just looking out for Jon’s wellbeing, Jon tells himself. This is no different than him bringing mugs of tea when Jon is recording statements or accompanying him to A&E to get stitches after Michael or inviting him to lunch in the first place. This is not, he tells his ridiculous, over-zealous, butterfly-filled stomach, a date.

“H...hello......?” the speaker announces.
And Jon jolts.
Freezes. Every muscle goes stiff, every pinprick of exhaustion leaves his body in an instant as a cold wave of shock crashes him out of his sickly stupor. He’s pretty sure it breaks his unbudging fever too, with the way he starts sweating — well, at least more than he has been. He’s been doing a lot of that lately, but — that’s not the point.
The point is, he freezes, all because of the voice on the other side. A voice that’s groggy, gentle, masculine, and definitely not Georgie’s.It's a bug, probably, that's keeping Jon confined to his motel room in Pittsburgh. Really, he just needs someone to talk to.

“Wait, so you don’t...?” Martin begins, and Jon can feel himself physically cringe in anticipation to— to— to what? To Martin saying he’s weird? For Martin to laugh and say yeah right, because who the hell doesn’t get that? C’mon Jon, that’s basic stuff. Be serious.
But then he looks up, and Martin’s not grinning at him. He doesn’t burst out laughing like he had before, nor does he roll his eyes and shake his head. He just sits there, mouth formed into a silent “oh” shape as if he’s just made a significant discovery, as if some puzzle he’s been working on has finally clicked into place. Martin looks up, meets Jon’s gaze with his wide, hypnotically brown eyes (they really are quite pretty, Jon’s noticed as they’ve spent more time together, much darker than his own and perfectly shaped to fit his face) and then he leans across the table.
“Um, Jon,” Martin begins softly, as if the empty cafe could be listening in on them, “you don’t have to tell me this if I’m overstepping here obviously, but...is this like...an ace thing?”Jon's quite used to being left out of secrets, it's just this particular one that really gets to him.

Martin stands next to him on the train. His hand rests just beneath Jon’s where it grips one of the metal poles, and Martin takes care not to brush against him despite how crowded the car is. Jon considered telling Martin, when they first got on the tube, that it was okay—that his touch would be… well, it wouldn’t be bad. Not like Nikola's. But he’d stayed silent, allowing Martin to cultivate a careful space between them. They’ve been silent for the past twenty minutes as they’ve passed by station after station on their way to Martin’s flat in Brixton.
Jon adds 24 hours onto his mental countdown of the time he has left until he’s allowed to break down and tells himself that he can manage. It’s… important to have goals, he thinks. He splits this one into steps.
Step one: get to Martin’s flat without crying.
