Summary
“You wanna move out?” Joel asks, and Ellie bites the side of her cheek briefly. Joel’s face conveys more than his tone, sometimes, but she can’t let herself look at him. It’ll make it too hard to say what she knows she needs to.
“Yeah,” she says, studying a chip in the paint on the railing with way more focus than it needs. “Probably a good idea, you and me having our own space.” She isn’t brave enough to bring up what people are saying about them not having their own space. She can’t do it. Either he’s not aware of it yet, or he is, but reminding him about it might mean him wanting her even farther away before her existence even in the backyard has other people making his life harder. If the closest she can get is being in the garage, she doesn’t want to risk fucking up even that.
“Alright,” he says after a long, long moment. She grits her teeth against the toneless quality of his voice. That’s the tone he uses when he doesn’t want someone to know what he’s actually feeling.
Like he would if he didn’t want a pathetic QZ kid to know how relieved he is that he’ll finally be done dealing with her shit.

Summary
“You're not the boss of me,” she says defiantly, and it’s true. She’s still not entirely used to only being directly answerable to one person, but she knows she is. Maria has no direct power over her. Only Joel does.
Maria doesn't appear to take it personally. In fact, she looks mildly amused.
“True,” Maria says mildly. “Come on then.”
Ellie stares in disbelief at her back as Maria starts walking–really, it’s riding the edge of a waddle, but Joel kicked her ankle when she made the observation about someone else before, so she gathers that’s probably rude–and the woman pauses only when she’s at the end of the road, turning only her head back to look.
“Or you can stand in the middle of the street until you get caught for skipping,” Maria suggests lightly, and Ellie glares.
(Still, she follows.)

Summary
“No,” he says, when four Fireflies as a unit manage to restrain him, pushing him to his knees on the floor.
“She’s gone,” a nurse says in a voice that might be gentle if she wasn’t delivering his worst nightmare right to him.
“No,” he says at once, the word nearly punched out of him. “No she’s not. Ellie, wake up.”
“Joel-” It’s Anderson speaking to him, he realizes distantly. He doesn’t really give a fuck. The man is lying to him, trying to say that his kid is dead.
“Ellie Williams, you wake up right now,” he orders. She likes her jokes, but this is going too fucking far. “It’s not funny. Now you wake up.”
It doesn’t matter how many commands he gives her, though.
Or how many pleas when the weight of what just happened starts to press in on him.
The only response he gets is that piercing, damning alarm.

Summary
He watched a documentary about wolves with Sarah once, about how they curl up in a den with their pups in winter to keep them safe, to keep them warm and protected from a world that could hurt them.
It's how this limbo feels, both of them in this cabin.
He’s exhausted, down to his fucking bones, residual illness still draining him, and he does his best to keep it from Ellie, made easier by the way she still doesn’t seem totally present, even if she talks a bit now at least. She’s conscious enough to perform the basic functions of living on her own, but even then he has to prompt her for things like taking a drink of water or continuing to eat after the first few bites from the deer he’d managed to shoot, cutting off what he could and leaving the rest in the woods, still too goddamn weak to pull it back on his own and unwilling to wake Ellie from her nap to help.
For now, she’s pressed against him, not dozing but not seeming entirely awake either. There's no space between them, not an inch. Ellie is careful to stay on his left, but she curls up right next to him, head on his shoulder in a way that scratches at the fuzzy place where his memories from Silver Lake live.

Summary
“I thought you were gonna be mad at me,” she says, flicking her eyes up to him briefly before looking back to the snowglobe, giving it another shake, this one more restrained.
“I get why you wanna go out,” he says, sitting back. Apparently they’ll be having this little chat entirely in the hallway. “I’m not going to let you, but I get why you want to.”
She bites the inside of her cheek, thoughtful.
“You promise you’re not mad?” She asks. It’s not the first time he’s been asked this question. He’s pretty sure it won’t be the last.
“Promise,” he tells her. “Already forgotten.”
She looks at him then, a studying sort of look, and then she smiles.
“That’s just because you’re getting senile,” she says, like the little shit she is.
Perhaps he should reconsider letting her off the hook so easily.

Summary
They’re towards the end of clearing the old shopping center when he loses track of Ellie. He opens his mouth to call for her, but just then, he hears her, her voice changed from when she speaks to him, taking on a stern, unyielding quality Tommy teasingly calls her “general mode.” He takes his cue from that, creeping closer and avoiding debris on the floor as he makes his way to a window to get a look at what’s going on in the direction he heard her from.
Looking through what’s left of the grimy glass, he sees a set of five men with a hungry, rangy look about them.
(while on what should be an easy practice patrol, joel and ellie run into trouble, and joel gets to relive one of the worst days of his life)

Summary
“Are we thinking white sheep or black sheep?”
The question, unrelated to anything, pulls her back to her body enough to frown. She’s shaking still, curled against Joel as tight as she can get, having woken up from a nightmare that left her screaming, convinced someone was sawing through her arm to roast it over their fire. In reality, Joel’s too-big shirt on her had just gotten twisted around her shoulder in her sleep, but the dream had been fucking vivid, and it’s like she can feel phantom chopping at the base of her arm.
“What?” She asks, voice a croak. She thinks briefly about tilting her head up to look at Joel when she asks it, but she’s tucked up in a little ball against him, and the feel of him all around her makes her feel safe in a way she’s been worrying she’d never feel again.
“For our moon sheep ranch when this is all over,” he says, resting his cheek on top of her head. “I think black sheep would be easier to find. The white ones might get lost.”

Summary
“It’s not for you.”
That shuts off her stream of words at once. He resists the urge to blink back at her in surprise. He hadn’t known he was going to say that until he said it. Seeing the way her shoulders have lost some of their tension, though, he knows at once that it was the right call. It galls him a bit, what he’s about to say, twenty years of survival making him reticent to admit any weakness.
But fourteen years before that has him speaking anyway.
Ellie won’t admit her weaknesses. That’s fine. She’s clearly been knocked over hard by that fucking place. He can take the fall for this one, if that’s what it takes to get her somewhere safe, a place where he can tend her properly, can tuck her away in a soft bed in a safe town, can get some meat back on her bones.
Can–please God–get some life back in her eyes.

Summary
When Joel calls his name and comes jogging towards him in Jackson, pulling him into a hug as fierce, as joyful as the ones he got when he was back on leave during his army days, he thinks, Is that all it took? I just needed to leave him alone to let him heal? I could’ve just fucking ditched him and then gone back? It’s a painful thought, that his own attempt at support just hindered Joel’s healing, but it’s a giddy one, too, the idea of his brother back with him.
Then he sees Joel catch a kid who almost falls off of her horse when she dismounts, the motion as easy and thoughtless as if he were-
Oh, he thinks, when he sees the way the girl looks at Joel, all sass and no regard, clearly not afraid of him in the slightest, the way she uses his personal space as her own without a second thought. Oh, you paternal fucker.

“So? Beach?” He asks, sitting back. “Yay or nay?”
“Yay,” she says around a yawn. “Big yay.” She settles down with a little wiggle that’s still as amusing as the first time he saw her do it months ago. “I bet it’s so cool,” she says, closing her eyes. “Pro-” She yawns. “Promise we’ll see it one day?”
“Promise,” he says softly, rising to pull her blankets up over her shoulder.
“And I wanna pet a shark,” she says dreamily.
“That one’s a no,” he says, sitting beside her to rub circles on her back, a surefire way of pushing her all the way over the edge into sleep.
“We’ll see,” she says before she’s out.

Summary
The day of Jackson’s sheep shearing, Ellie’s up before the sun.
Joel, predictably, is not.
She’s learned that settled into the peace of Jackson, he is very much not a morning person. She’d suspected as much from how his grumpiness was always at peak in the mornings while they were on the road, but sharing a house has really made it sink in that unless there’s a world-saving quest ahead of him, Joel would quite happily never see the day before at least 8 in the morning, which is one of the reasons he usually ends up taking later patrols when he can.
Fortunately (and unfortunately) for him, though, it’s sheep shearing day, and she’s ready to see if he was full of shit about liking sheep or not.

Summary
“Well,” the woman says, in a way that makes it clear she’s trying to perk herself back up as she holds out the dish, “will you let him know Shirley dropped by and left this? I was already baking today and figured he-you two could use a little treat.”
The impulsive thoughts she tries very hard to control for the sake of not causing trouble for Joel to handle makes her want to slap the dish down onto the porch, but she manages to refrain, giving the woman a tight smile as she accepts the dish with just enough force that it could be considered a yank.
“Sure thing, Cheryl,” she says brightly, using her foot to slam the door before the woman finishes opening her mouth to correct her.

Summary
“Hey, kiddo,” he says, knocking on her door gently. “You up? Gonna have to leave soon if you don’t wanna be late for school.” It’s unusual for him to have to do this–just like Sarah, she’s usually the one who wakes him up, his youngest also a habitual morning person in some sick cosmic joke against him–and he’s trying not to immediately default to thinking something’s wrong. She’s a teenager. Teenagers stay up too late and then sleep in. He got back late from a last minute patrol to check out reports of a raider group in the area last night; she’d been asleep when he got back and peeked in on her, but he doesn’t know when she actually fell asleep. For all he knows, she could have been faking him out just to keep reading one of her books as soon as her door shut again.
Silence.
“Ellie?” He calls a little louder, trying to fight the knee jerk panic. “Kiddo, you up?”
Straining his hearing, he can just catch the sound of her covers rustling, and he lets it settle him.
The fact that she still hasn’t responded means it only settles him so far, though.

Summary
He’s learned a few things about Ellie Wiliams entirely against his will in the time they’ve been stuck together. She likes Chef Boyardee Ravioli, she hates whatever the fuck a green ration is, she talks like she’s fillibustering, and she has absolutely no respect for personal space.
Tonight he’s learning she’s a goddamn Monopoly shark.
“Pay up,” she says smugly, holding her hand out. “Rent’s due, motherfucker.”
He pretends he’s not nursing as much of a grudge as he is as he counts out mildly water-warped paper money, the box she found in an old store intact but not in the best condition.
He wonders if being a piece of shit landlord was a class for FEDRA brats or if the skill just comes naturally to her.

Summary
The first time she comes barreling into the house like the devil’s on her heels, he’s on his feet with his gun in hand at once, stepping between her and the door, sure an intruder is about to burst through after her. He readies himself for a fight, already planning how to get an attacker out of the house and away from Ellie.
And then he hears her laughing.
He turns to see her, panting and sweaty, laid out on the floor like she’s a rug, her face practically glowing with the force of her smile. She lifts both hands to the air in fists and cheers.
“What are you doing,” he asks, but the question comes out flat in light of his confusion. He gives the door one more look, but no intruder is imminent, and he holsters his gun, going to one knee beside Ellie, still on her back, breathing hard.
“I beat it!” She says, clearly proud about whatever the hell she’s talking about.
“Beat what?” He asks.
“Curfew!” She nearly crows.
He blinks.
It’s possible they’ve had a misunderstanding about what exactly a curfew is.

Summary
He looked good on the throne; he reclined into it like he belonged there, making the large duracrete slabs seem as plush and comfortable as a sultan’s chaise lounge. The supplicants, a human and a twi’lek, finished their business and bowed before they departed. Din watched them pass, and when he looked back, Fett was mid-stretch, arms raised, body drawn strong and tall. He settled again along one armrest, his head propped against his hand. After a moment, he slowly spread his legs wide.
Din stared. It took him several heartbeats to realize that Fett was looking at him again.
