Summary
The Mire wasn't always a desert.
Vermillion is a warden, Quinacridone is the prisoner he's currently tasked with executing. Executions in the Mire are a lengthy process of warden and prisoner wandering the desert until its time to offer the condemned back to the Mire.
This isn't Vermillion's first execution but restless ghosts, hungry caves, old gods awaiting reascension, and an unwise wager with his prisoner make it by far the strangest.

Fire pierces his heart. Its heat will not save him from the ice devouring his flesh.
"You will not die," an old friend hisses in a dead tongue. "We have suffered too many failures. I grow tired of this game. You will not fail me, not again, not so close to the end of this farce."
Spitefully, he tries to push away the warmth gnawing at him.
"Do not think you can force yourself to pass on without my blessing." Furious, the fire twists like a knife in his chest. "Weakened as I am, this is my territory, not yours. You will linger in agony if I will it so."
So he does.

Even so, it’s hard to describe. It’s like - a momentary surge in the air around him that’s gone as soon as it appeared. Leaving him with the fainest sense of deja vu. Like he’s been here before. Or as if he’s forgotten something important.

Or, "What inspired Taion to call his Blade 'Mondo'?" Or, "How exactly did Ethel and Cammuravi's rivalry begin?" Or, "What happened the first time Taion and Eunie's Interlink cancelled out whilst they were in midair?" Or, "Why did Moebius allow the Nopon Archsage to set up shop in Aionios?" ("Meh! 'Allow', he says.")
This is one author's attempt at providing some answers to these questions, and many more you might never have thought to ask. (Like, "What if Nia had a fondness for mimicking the Zekenator when she thought no one was watching?")

Summary
When the worlds of Keves and Agnus began to split apart once more upon Z’s defeat, they each intended to return to their prior states. But after a sudden freeze in each, a lingering voice is forced to restore a backup of the worlds… so far back that the man who created them yet lived.
Though all should return to normal if the events of each play out identically, the backup is found to be corrupted. The voice finds no major world-threatening issues and proceeds anyway, but perhaps that was a poor choice of words.
As Noah wakes up in Colony 9, with the Sword of the End by his bedside, and Mio wakes up in Torigoth, only a few changes have occurred to the two worlds in the grand scheme of things. But though relatively few in number to the thousands of lives in each world, each life that persisted from the endless now was anything but unimportant.
After all, two very important journeys were about to begin.
*A for-fun post-ending rerun of the plots of Xenoblade 1 and 2 with Xenoblade 3's characters present, and new plot connections along the way.*
