Mickey needs help, even if he's too blind to see it himself, leave it to Ian who's entire goal in life is to help others, trying to make up for the fact he couldn't help his mother.
**If you can stand to get past the first two chapters, I'm confident the 3rd one is better

Mickey’s tone is defeated, and his shoulders barely hold their shape. He’s tired. Exhausted, really. Ian can see that in every line of his body, every curve of his face.
There’s so much that Ian wants to say to him, so much he wants to scream across this phone line connecting them, but he can’t. His head is a mess, in more ways than one, and no matter how fast he tries to parse through his tidal wave of emotions, he can’t figure them out.
He broke up with Mickey. Right?
Only now, he can’t really remember why.
“I don’t know,” Ian says honestly, and hopes it’s enough.

He gets assigned to a pro bono case and the first time he speaks to his client the client is pissed at him for reasons unknown.
Then they begin to unravel their pasts that were entwined before they even met.
