    Kip leaned against the counter, projecting an air of casual competence he absolutely did not feel. His heart was doing a stupid little tap dance against his ribs, which was ridiculous. He served handsome men all the time. Halifax was full of bearded fishermen and lumbersexual hipsters.

    But this was different. This guy looked like he was the forest.

    "Morning," Kip said, aiming for breezy and landing somewhere near slightly breathless. "What can I get started for you? We have a Guatemalan roast today that has notes of chocolate and existential dread, if that's your vibe."

    Or:
    The one where Scott is a grumpy junior hockey coach and Kip is a charmingly awkward rugby player. Both come with their own baggage. Both are miserable in their own way.

    Ilya was only a few strides behind Shane on the ice.

    He clocked the angle before the hit even landed; Marlow coming in too hot, too fast, shoulder high. Shane turned and slowed at the wrong moment, skates clipping, balance gone.

    Impact.

    The sound carried oddly through the arena, duller than boards, sharper than ice. Shane went down hard, helmet skidding, body twisting. And then it all happened at once. Skates tangled. Marlow stumbled over him as he fell, too. A skate’s blade flashed too close, too sharp.

    Shane's injuries during the Boston/Montreal game are much more life-threatening than in canon. Ilya's quick thinking and bone-deep instincts are the only reason he survives.

    The pain in his calves started out subtle, only occurring at the tail end of runs or games. Shane’s a hockey player, he knows how to work through pain. This is nothing compared to when he played with bruised ribs after being slammed into the boards a little too hard by Rozanov. Now that is what Shane considered real pain to be, not this dull ache in his calves.
