Jazz rides out on the coattails of warmth as the door swings open. He takes in a breath that pulls a tight grimace that could be considered a smile to his face because once this wooden barrier is breached—there can be no more him: he cannot exist as he is; no, for this night: he is little mouse, he is pet, he is Astarion with endless conditionals that he’s helpless to give into.
He's ready for a sharp tongue, poison-dipped daggers reflected in the depths of Raphael's gaze as Raphael tilts his head up to look at him—and while he expects frustration, ire, all he finds in its place is: Raphael, wilted, melted like Raphael only ever is when the role he stuffs himself into rips apart at the seams to allow vulnerability to escape. Here stands Raphael: contemplative twist sitting freely the corners of his lips like there only ever is when Raphael has been drinking enough to drown out whatever thoughts must plague him.
Ah, so it's that kind of night.

In the hall closet, there’s a clunky ladder stored—it’s a nuisance, but it’s tall and steady enough to get to the attic latch and into it with little fanfare. The hatch opens, and as he climbs inside, cleaver in hand, he takes a moment to appreciate the blessed silence—a welcome change. Mahito tends to pick ones with fight, the ones with something to live for, desperate in their fight.
When it’s his turn to shop, he has a different criteria than Mahito; he prefers the proud ones, defiant in their ego but gullible: a secret sadness woven into their soul.

Being forced to sit while Gale spits therapy lingo at him doesn’t compel him to open up anymore than Halsin’s sad eyes or Raphael’s stony silences did—rather, he feels like screaming, breaking the first thing he can get his hands on: perhaps that shiny Therapist of the Year award that keeps hitting the light coming through the office window as if it’s begging for attention.
Whatever Dr. Gale Dekarios might think, there’s nothing to say.
But later... he watches with unease as Halsin begins to unfold the previously crumpled up paper he left on the floor of Halsin's truck all those weeks ago, fingers still decorated with pinpricks of blood leftover from removing splintered glass from his skin. Halsin offers him the paper: a cartoon sun with sunglasses smiles up at him, Comic Sans makes up the entire document—it is as if he’s being mocked by Gale, even outside of the office.
No words are exchanged. The meaning behind the paper isn’t hard to understand.
It is a monumental effort to snatch it from Halsin’s hands, to reply:
“Fine. Fine.”
No one ever said healing wasn't a messy, chaotic affair.

“And so,” Astarion sighs dramatically. “Overcome by peckishness, I found myself milling about, thinking: who else do I know that has a lovely neck—and, of course, there’s Shadowheart, but no sooner than I’d open my mouth to proposition her would she call upon her beloved goddess to smite me. Lae’zel scares me and would have no qualms about sticking that garish githyanki blade of hers through my gut. Gale’s no good: there’s nothing but rot inside that one, you see. Who knew courting the Mistress of Magic would have such dire consequences, hm? And there’s Wyll, sweet darling Wyll, but the stench of six-foot-something tiefling sits on every single one of his belongings.”
Astarion looks at him, properly, and those eyes pin him to the spot with their inquisitiveness and only then does it set in that just like him: Astarion is a hunter.
“Which leads me... to you,” Astarion finishes, pointing his empty goblet in his direction.
Warmth found by the fire; warmth found in the depths of darkness.

We keep finding him just. Sitting motionless in the dark listening to this... insane clown group, or something.”
He tsks, transferring his crisp egg to his bowl full of burnt rice. “Anyone who likes clowns isn’t to be trusted. A proper maniac, sounds like. It’s no wonder he got dumped.”

Regardless, he looks into the crowd as best he can—bats his eyelashes at the less pretty, less young women in the crowd. White hair, dashing smile, dark black velvet blazer and wine-red turtleneck that compliments his paleness even in the terrible summer sun: he is the catch.
“We shall start the opening bid at 100 gold!” Gale says, chipper; and well... that’s rather cheap, insultingly so.
Hubris can be a terrible thing to overcome.

There’s no way he’d voluntarily be working in this decrepit little maid café or dealing with the secondary bane of his entire working existence currently sitting by the wide set of windows, reading the day’s paper as rain pitter-patters against the glass.
He’s not gentle as he sets the platter down: Earl Grey tea, brewed strong; mint and cucumber sandwiches cut into perfectly symmetrical triangles; a nectarine and a few grapes.
“Here,” he says, short.
Raphael raises his eyebrow, slow and dramatic as he picks up a sandwich triangle—absolutely insufferable.
“I must say, your tableside manners leave much to be desired, little mouse.”
There's some things a minimum wage job can't prepare you for.

“All by your lonesome, little mouse?” Raphael asks in lieu of a proper greeting. “A strange sight indeed.”
He steels himself for eye contact when he glances over, but Raphael’s gaze sits on the girls as Karlach dips Jenevelle low enough for the loose curtain of Jenevelle’s hair to kiss the laminated floor. He narrows his eyes in suspicion—Raphael stands just out of kicking distance.
Unfortunate.
What happens in Vegas doesn't necessarily get to stay in Vegas.

It’s... not depression, not really, just; it’s a struggle to get himself to leave the apartment, to sit through double the amount of classes than the previous year, to force himself to be dedicated instead of letting the absent-minded automation take over.
He’s one of the fortunate ones in the program—an internship at Szarr and Szarr waits for him once his graduation cap goes flying off into the air: a paid one, too, a rarity.
College, an overpriced law degree: all a lead up to a lifetime of having to hide just who he is.
Perfect.
What better way to soothe the senior blues than with dubious drugs and regrettable nights.

Living with Karlach was comfortable; it was fun and he felt safe with her and perhaps, the most important thing: it was affordable. It’s not as if he’s destitute, but he’s not rolling around in money either. He’s much better off than he ever was when he lived with Cazador: now, he’s got a regular life full of regular things and comforts—but even these regular things are expensive. Two months of being Karlach-less has drawn his attention to the fact that, well.
There’s no way in hells he’s going to be able to afford living this way for any longer.
A friend of a friend: in the grand scheme of things, it's not worth much—one can never be too careful, after all.

Their apartments are separated by mere feet; with each step, his mood somehow lifts and worsens simultaneously. Lifting: because finally, a sensible solution of release for the irritation that’s been blooming in his chest for the entire day; and it worsens because, well, Halsin makes him... uncomfortable for lack of a better term.
Nothing so serious as Halsin having ill-tempered mannerisms or aggressions, just. He isn’t one for feelings, commitments—and Halsin: he is a giant abundance of both. Which, it’s very fine and well for Halsin, but those sentimentalities have no space in his life and he’d like them as far away as possible at all times when possible.
'Love thy neighbor': to Astarion, it's not love but it's... something, alright.
