“Mike. You've not eaten since this morning,” he says, not a question. “Haven't you?”
Michael does not answer at once. Dustin, mercifully, is too occupied to notice, halfway through devouring his potatoes, cabbage forgotten at his side. Holly hums quietly over her stew, content. “It is of no matter,” Michael says at last.
“You should eat,” Will says softly. “Why haven't you?”
“I am well.”
“That was not my question.”
Michael’s gaze flickers to him, something unreadable passing through it, then warming, just slightly. “Cleric,” he says, low, as though the word itself were an answer.
Will exhales, quiet. “You cannot tend to others if you do not tend to yourself.”
“I manage,” Michael murmurs.
“You endure,” Will corrects, saddened. “That is not the same, and you know it.”

He squeezes his eyes shut for a second, swallowing hard. He knows he’s not just some replacement. He’s not a second Max any more than Dustin is a second Mike. That’s stupid. He knows that.
He’s his own person. Him and Max couldn’t be more different if they tried.
But… Max was Lucas’ first love.
The first person he ever kissed. The girl he used to talk about like she was everything, like she was forever, the one he thought he was going to marry when they were just kids, when everything felt simple and permanent.
And, on the other side, Mike had Jane. His first kiss too, his first everything, in a way that stuck.
Will’s chest tightens.
Did Lucas feel that way about Max, the way Mike feels about Jane?
Something deep and steady and impossible to shake?
or, Will and Lucas are on a break. Will's worried that Lucas doesn't really want him, but Lucas is desperate to get his (ex) boyfriend back. Meanwhile, Mike has some letting go to do.

“I just… I want to be able to take you somewhere, alright? Then we'll go for a drive, and I have something else planned.” He hesitates for half a second. Then, softer, “let me take care of my wife.”
Will makes a small, startled sound, and then he’s laughing, hiccupping a bit from the force of it. “Your what?” Will manages, breathless, grinning despite himself.
Behind him, Mike’s smiling, he can feel it, the way it presses warm and bright into his shoulder. “My wife,” Mike repeats, even though he's tensing a little like he's nervous Will is going to turn him down.
or, It's Will's birthday and Mike's planned the whole day for him, like a good boyfriend should. Will's a lot more focused on the fact that Mike keeps referring to him as his wife, though.

“Does- does your mom know?” Mike asks, quieter now. Will shakes his head. Mike’s throat tightens. “I think my mom’s gonna call her,” he murmurs, even though he’s not totally sure. It feels like something she would do. Mike kind of wants her to, too.
Will curls in tighter at that, like the words themselves hurt. “Dad’s gonna get mad again,” he whispers. “I don’t want him to get mad.”
Mike’s nose scrunches up, his eyes burning. It feels like crying, but different. Hotter, sharper, like it’s trying to claw its way out of him instead of spill. “He hurts you,” Mike spits, voice wobbling despite how hard he tries to keep it steady. “He shouldn’t do that. That’s- that's not allowed. That’s bad.”
or, miwi werehere. Mike just wants Will to be safe, and the safest place he can think of is his den.

“…Do you think she’s out there?” Mike asks eventually, voice so quiet it barely feels real. “Somewhere?”
Will doesn’t hesitate. “Yes,” he exhales all at once, the word coming out in one sharp breath. “I do.”
He has to believe that. The look on Mike’s face all those years ago, desperate- he has to believe it.
“…I don’t,” Mike admits, and Will flinches. “I don’t think I ever did, I think maybe I just felt… guilty.”
or, Mike lets Will use his body like a canvas, and he tries to be honest along the way. It would be easier if Will wasn't stuck in his head.

Summary
“Your turn.” Will decides, offering the joint to Mike. Mike shakes his head and takes it from him with his free hand, the one that’s not hidden behind Will’s back, still soothing.
That hand feels like a million pounds right now, in the best way. And it’s so soft, even through Will’s shirt. Mike’s hand, coupled with the soft fabric of his shirt, held the nostalgia of all the years they had known each other—stoking Will’s enjoyment and the settling of his anxiety.
Will watches as Mike takes a hit of the joint. How could he not? Mike makes direct eye contact as he inhales and exhales the smoke. He doesn’t even break eye contact as he passes the joint to Dustin. Will looks down at Mike’s lips and then back up at his adorable brown eyes. He needs to look away before Will decides to make out with Mike in front of everyone. Yeah, not a good idea. Instead, he just smiles at Mike.

Mike and Will, now secretly dating, go to Cali to visit Lucas and Max with the rest of the party. They plan to announce their relationship, but when Max brings out a joint, things do not go as planned for Mike and Will.

Will Byers loves Mike Wheeler.
It shouldn’t be a big deal. Of course he loves Mike. He always has. But it’s never felt like this. It’s never hurt to think about it, but it also never felt like a revelation rather than a fact. It hurts, and there’s nothing he can do to ease the pain. He looks across the room at Mike and all he sees is beauty where minutes ago he only saw his best friend. He notices entire constellations in the freckles strewn across his nose, stars glittering in his eyes, and it all seems inevitable. He loves Mike. He loves him and it’s a foregone conclusion, a wish on a shooting star destined to burn out. He loves him and he can’t ever have him, not in that way, and there’s nothing in the world that can ever hurt him again quite like this.
OR: When the party dares Mike to tell someone he loves them for one hundred days, Will doesn't expect to be the unlucky recipient. He definitely doesn't expect it to consume his last three months in Hawkins. But like most things in his life, absolutely nothing goes to plan.
