Maka is upset.
It's obvious. There's a tension to her shoulders whenever she's sitting down, even if she's just studying. It's not the same hunch she gets and then curses about when it's testing season, but something else drawing her spine straight and rigid as if her whole body's rigged by wires. Instead of handling some teasing, she's always up and out the door in a matter of moments-- she keeps speeding everywhere as well, even from class to class, hitting the ground fast enough that anyone trying to catch up with her has to put in an effort to do so. Not to mention her hair trigger temper; a yelling Maka is no surprise, but when she lashes out nowadays, it's always with acid dripping from her words, poisoning any conversation that might have come before.
Soul has been on the receiving side of this. In fact, he's been watching it happen with other people too, and he can't figure out what the hell is up with her.

It’s almost beautiful to watch, the boy suddenly poofing to the middle of a bunch of girls who don't even know he exists, and just… letting go of his thoughts for a few beautiful minutes, twirling and moving like he was born for it.
It takes Willie’s breath away.

She watches his face, but he shows no signs of making a joke or any sort of follow-up. “Well,” Anne says a bit uselessly, “I guess you’ll just have to write to me then.”
Gilbert smiles small. “I guess so.”
