Summary
Twenty years ago Edward Teach was captured and faced the noose before being offered an the King's Act of Grace. In exchange for ten years of service to the crown he'd be given freedom, all he had to do was join the Aerial Corps and allow his body to be twisted into a machine of war complete with taloned feet and wings. Feared and disdained, he's lived his life in endless battles with no end in sight. What does a monster do? What life is left for him?
When he injures his wing in battle he finds himself at the doorstep of a man who he's been told can help repair damaged feathers. What he finds is a lunatic living in an airship and promises of something Ed had thought had been lost to him for twenty years.
Hope. And a future.
Things do not go as planned.

“Your doormat,” Stede clarifies, pointing over his shoulder.
Ed looks past Stede at the welcome mat sitting just outside the door. It's Ed's way of not getting anyone to bother him during heat, reading in blocky black letters, ‘I’m in heat. Fuck me or GTFO.’
Smirking, Ed looks back at Stede, whose grin has gone somehow even broader. “I’m here for the first thing!” he chirps.

Summary
The boots land heavy on the floor in Stede’s peripheral vision.
They’re in awful shape, really quite embarrassing. Watermarks leave unsightly stains on the uppers and they’re scuffed up all over, and the silver hardware is so tarnished it’s almost as black as the leather. The right boot has a quarter-inch gouge so deep that Stede can’t begin to imagine how it got there, with only a half-hearted attempt made to treat it by rubbing in a little polish.
Such poorly-maintained leather in a place like Blackbeard’s is a rare thing; it’s almost a novelty, how frankly shitty they look.

Or: Stede Bonnet, the world’s bitchiest bootblack, is absolutely not going to waste his time on Ed's shitty boots or his shitty attitude, thank you very much. Nope. Definitely not.
