While the Valar were figuring out how to read a calendar, Freya did the math. She got to review the homework before taking the test this time, which was nice, but that made the most likely endgame obvious. She knew from the second she offered to do it that reverse fetch-questing an evil ring was going to be rough. She was trying anyway. Because she was very, very stupid.
She expected to pay a high price for the chance to stay.
She didn’t expect there to be an extra cost at the end.
Or for them to both pay it.

Steph takes a deep breath in. "My name is Stephanie Brown, but, um... it used to be Todd?" Her voice rises at the end of the sentence, making her sound unsure. She doesn't want to be unsure about this.
On the screen, Timothy Drake-Wayne's overly expressive eyebrows shoot up. "Oh. Oh! Yeah, umm, come in, of course. I'm gonna... I'm gonna go get Bruce." The screen clicks off abruptly, leaving Steph feeling distinctly wrong-footed.

Summary
Stephanie Brown had three rules for running around the streets of Gotham.
The first was don't stay out past dark, this one was pretty simple. Just get home before the streetlights turn on.
The second was never to talk to strangers. Only a sheltered idiot would follow some random guy for the promises of candy.
The third, and most important rule was never and I repeat NEVER run towards someone screaming, in fact, run the other way.
Her rules had worked so far, and honestly, Gotham wasn't as terrible as some people made it out to be, or at least it was better than being home alone all the time. She hadn't even been murdered once! and that's a win in her books. Things were going well for Stephanie Brown.
Or at least they were, up until the day all three of her rules got broken in one go.
But it wasn't really her fault, at least not most of it.
She wasn't even the person who broke that last one.
