Summary
Tossing and turning at night, worrying about a man who doesn’t think of him as anything more than an acquaintance is a downright demeaning way to live, he inherently knows this. It doesn’t stop him from losing sleep over whether or not Mark has already moved onto the next big thing.
It doesn’t hurt any less when he watches Mark eat breakfast across the table the following morning, never losing eye-contact with his phone.
(Mark wants to be friends, and Donghyuck is tired of running in circles.)

It must be a sign from the universe that the seat next to Peter Lee has become his designated spot.
He’s not sure why the seat’s always empty. Peter’s totally normal, definitely not the type of person you’d swerve to avoid. He’s a good-looking, no, the best-looking guy he’s ever seen in the department. He writes his notes on his MacBook like a secretary in a high-rise corporate office, and smells like the expensive part of a Macy’s. Considering the amount of texting he does, Mark’s concluded he has a lot of friends, so he's not antisocial. The only natural conclusion Mark can draw is that the universe wants them to be closer together.
One of these days, he thinks, he’s going to say something to him.
(Mark's a writing major that can't write, and Donghyuck is straight out of a daydream. Mark feels like he's finally waking up.)

But those times just couldn’t compare to the sight of Mark walking out of the water, struggling not to lose his balance—which he did, making Donghyuck remember that hot or not, Mark Lee was still a dork—and then stepping right in front of Donghyuck with his swimsuit glued to his thighs and his smooth skin right there on display.
For a full minute, Donghyuck felt like a character in a cartoon, blushing so hard and fumbling with his hands so wildly that it would be impossible for anyone in a ten-mile radius not to see just how flustered he was.
Mark definitely noticed. “Dude, are you having a heat stroke?”
Never mind.
(or, a story about mark lee giving donghyuck too many reasons to gay panic in a single day: from running around half naked at the beach, to having the cutest sunburnt cheeks and finally, stealing donghyuck's coziest hoodie.)

He doesn’t feel ridiculous when he thinks about it again, months later, when the video comes out and this specific cut makes its rounds on social media. He doesn’t even feel ridiculous when he peruses through the many options, or even when he asks the clerk helping him if this ring is a good friendship ring option, or if it’s too much. (It wasn’t, by the way. Too much of a promise ring, apparently.)
He only really starts feeling ridiculous when he’s standing in front of the door to Donghyuck’s apartment, with a box in his pocket that suddenly weighs a ton, hesitating on whether he should input the code and go inside, or if he still has time to throw the rings out through the windows.
