After Will's return to the FBI, Jack proposes a new, and very unorthodox method to put Hannibal Lecter behind bars. He wants to read his thoughts, to get him to "admit" to being the Ripper that way. The operation takes a weird turn however, when instead of murder and cannibalism, Hannibal seems preoccupied with something else.

Hannibal noticed the gas station worker almost immediately—lean, with loose brown curls that hung over tired, gray eyes. He watched the worker over a series of days, finding amusement in the other’s constant look of irritation, the dry cadence of his voice as he talked with the other customers. There was something fascinating about the man, Will, that kept Hannibal coming back over and over again, though Will would never know it.

This is what the story could have been without Hannibal being toxic, manipulative, and abusive towards Will while still keeping the core traits of his character the same (he's still a psychopath, he's still a serial killer, he's still a cannibal).

Summary
Chapters 1-3 updated on November 14th to any previous readers.
When Will is acquitted of his alleged crimes he has to accept that he couldn't win the psychological cat and mouse game he was in with Hannibal. Hannibal had to suffer for what he had done to him and being out of his reach was the perfect punishment for Hannibal.
Hannibal, Alana and Jack travel to Wolf Trap Virginia to invite Will back to work but upon their arrival they discover an empty house. No dogs and no Will. His nearest neighbour informed them that Will had left a few days ago. That wasn't Hannibal's plan. He no longer had control and he felt something inside of him he didn't know he could feel. Regret.
