Nicky is standing by the island counter, sleeves rolled up to his elbows, a light dusting of flour on his forearms. Joe can see the flex of muscles as he mixes the bowl and he shivers. He wants those hands on him.
He must have made some noise because Nicky looks over to him. Nicky smiles, soft and sweet, and any self-control Joe had is gone. In a flash, he’s over at Nicky’s feet, kneeling and pressing his face into Nicky’s stomach. There’s no hesitation as Nicky sets the bowl down and brings a flour-covered hand to hold him close, pressure exactly right against the base of his skull and Joe shudders with relief, melting into the touch with a whimper.
“Oh, tesoro,” Nicky says, sounding absolutely devastated. “I’m so sorry.”
