Thomas flinched at the sharp edge to Newt’s words but held his gaze.

“I’ve had time to process,” Alex says. He’s got a hand up cradling the back of Michael’s head, holding him firmly in place, and he starts working his fingers through Michael’s curls, trying to memorize the texture against his fingertips. “Maybe not a lot of time, but still. I’m springing this on you, I know it’s a lot. Maybe I shouldn’t have—”
“No,” Michael cuts him off, pulling slightly away from the hug and frowning at him with ferocity and determination. “If you’re about to take back the proposal, you don’t get to do that either. I already said yes.”
Alex laughs. He keeps doing that today, keeps looking at Michael’s face and smiling, hearing his voice and laughing. It makes no sense, but he’s so fucking happy. He really had been scared he’d never see the love of his life again. And he’s aware, god, it’s probably morbid even to think it, but he’s aware that he’s the lucky one here. He’s the one who gets to spend the rest of his life with Michael, when the same isn’t true in reverse.
