Stede explores his feelings for Ed by writing him secret love letters and teaching him to write. They grow closer and Stede's feelings grow more erratic for Ed.
exerpt: Ed balled his hands into fists, thinking. Then, banging his hands on the desk, he rose, yelling out, “It’s a motherfuckin’ I!” He – gently – slams the pen to the page, crossing out his first attempt at maim and writing the correct version. He even adds an exclamation point. “I like to maim!” He shouts, pointing to each word as he reads it.
“Amazing! You do love to maim!” Stede matches his excitement.
