The figure tilts their head, attention captured, the antlers going with the motion and making it ethereal in the flicking alive light. A hand black with a glove rises, and you realize they’re pointing at you.
Your blood is ice. They may be medusa, those antlers may be snakes, you feel like stone. The hand they’re pointing curls its fingers- it beckons you to go closer. Your chest hitches, retreating back into the tent in a flinch too large to be mistaken as something else.

Summary
She should’ve known better.
She really should’ve known better. The worst part is she knew it at the time, too. Maybe it wouldn’t have annoyed her so much if it was just hindsight.
She knew she shouldn’t have been anywhere near the bridge, not with the new blockades. She knew it was a problem- she just didn’t think Rictus would go down there himself. Why would he?
What an unfortunately, horrifically dumb thing to get caught over.
She presses her forehead harshly against the cold of the bar directly in front of her like that’ll help clear her head. All that happens is the escape of her breath and the feeling of something close to defeat as it puffs out around the cold metal.

The sunlight cuts through the smallest crack of the curtain. Specks float illuminated from behind, glittering gold and fuzzy until his pupils adjust. In the not-quite-consciousness there is silence, and peace.
He breathes in and the world filters through his nostrils with it. A hypnogogic jerk to wakefulness.

Even if you hadn’t you’d certainly feel the change into that nice hazy feeling it’s diffusing through your limbs. Maybe you’ll let him get away with it again for a while. It makes your eyes flick closed. You can feel the soft ever-elusive memories of your previous life poke at the edges of your consciousness. It’s almost cradling you-
You hear a snick of something metallic and you feel your body dropping and then it’s just odd swimming darkness of what your body passes as sleep, but is likely death begging to take you, in truth. And then for the first time in a hundred and fourty odd years- there’s nothing.

The front door opens and you cock your head up to it, tilted to the side to listen better. It shuts again, unmistakeable this time.
You bound over, metaphorical and literal tail wagging in your elation to greet him. The hallway is through the living room, the pads of your feet bouncing in the shoes you didn’t take off.
You pause when he does. He’s been gone almost three days. You’re certain the face he’s greeting you with doesn’t make sense, not unless you’d-
“Bad dog,” he snaps, his voice as thunderous as it ever gets.
