And precisely because of that, Richie knew he had to tell him everything. That he wanted to tell him everything, that he wanted Eddie to know this thing that was eating him alive. Maybe it was selfish, yes, to want to share the burden of what lived inside of him, but hell, they shared everything —the nightmares, the fear, all the fucked up things that went through their heads after that summer. So he started speaking.

It started when Max gave him Billy’s jacket. The leather one; the tough guy one; the one he wore on dates to impress whoever he wanted to; the one he ripped off before smashing Steve’s face in. That one… although in all fairness it probably started long before that. Maybe in the bathroom with Robin when she told him about Tammy Thompson, and the secret he wanted to spill, felt safe enough to confess, got stuck in his throat. Maybe it was all those times that asshole sauntered into Scoops Ahoy and made sailor jokes or called him ‘Captain Princess.’ Or maybe, most probably, it was the first time he ever locked eyes with that blonde dick. When Billy, chest glistening with spilt beer, the cheers of the party at his back, stalked across the room just to get to him. Predator walk, predator eyes; like he wanted to eat Steve whole. Billy had looked at him like that before he’d bashed Steve’s face in that night at the Byer’s too, out by the car with smoke and his wicked tongue between them; and wasn’t that just the kicker, he still wanted Billy after it all. After that hell of a fight, or epic beatdown, as Dustin liked to call it.
But regardless, it started when Max gave him Billy’s jacket.

“I know lifting's a bad idea but I’m feeling.” Shame twisted up in Billy’s gut, and he toyed at his lasagna with his fork. “I don’t feel as. I don’t know. Confident.” His muscle mass was not as bulky as it used to be -- his abs and biceps just a shadow of what they once were. He had a soft little belly now. And then there were the scars. Dark pink floral patterns of scars all wound over his back, sides, and abdomen.
Suddenly the thought of shirtless summer weather struck dread in his heart. For now, long-sleeved henleys and sweatshirts provided the perfect way for him to hide. It was literally the only time he’d been thankful for winter.
“Hey,” Harrington said from across the table. He paused until Billy looked up to his eyes. His tone grew delicate and serious. “I’m not fucking around, okay? You. Look. Good.”
And the way that Harrington looked at him -- brown eyes soft, his gaze lingering on Billy’s face. On his eyes. Well, maybe he meant it.
“Yeah?” Billy asked. He felt his face heating. “You think so?”
Harrington took the last bite of his lasagna. “Definitely.”
