Abbot lifted his head to look down at her. “See, that’s the post-traumatic stress. Something happens that your brain decides is a life or death situation. You have a massive adrenaline kick while it’s all happening, and then when it’s bleeding out of you on the comedown, your brain throws out anything that’s not completely vital. The amount of car crash patients we have who don’t even remember coming to the ER when they submit requests for their medical records for insurance… the brain’s a weird thing, Mohan.”
“Yeah,” she said, shooting him a look out of the side of her eyes. “It can even make you convinced you have to hurt yourself in order to seek external validation when the most logical course of action is rest.”
He snorted softly, shaking his head and leaning it back. “God,” he muttered, his cheeks stained pink. “Robby was right. You should have gone into psych.”

Pete loves Vegas, of course, loves him more than anything in the whole wide world, and nothing can change that. And he knows that Vegas loves him at least as much, probably more, but neither of those facts seems to be making the relationship any easier to navigate.
No, Pete never really expected his life with Vegas to be easy, but he sure as hell didn’t expect it to be so hard, either. He thought they would simply click, like they clicked during their safe house days. He thought there would be problems, yes, but he expected they would be able to solve those, to talk about them, because that’s what adults do, right?
Turns out (shockingly), that neither of them really knows how to communicate – in fact, their attempts to do so only tend to make matters much worse.
It’s not Vegas’ fault, obviously, that the slightest bit of what he perceives as criticism completely extinguishes the light in his eyes and makes him withdraw, just as it’s not Pete’s fault that the moment he sees it happen, he takes back anything he said that made Vegas so sad.

“I don’t need your help, bodyguard.” He said the last word with a disgusted tone.
Not knowing what else to say because clearly Vegas wasn’t taking the hint, Pete rubbed his face and shouted out, “You asshole!”
That made Vegas halter in his step. Slowly, he faced Pete again and asked, “What did you say?”
He didn’t hesitate and enunciated, “You asshole.”

Or Pete is assigned to help Vegas out on a mission to gather intel. However, a small incident occurs that has the potential to affect their newfound relationship.

Vegas couldn’t quite believe that even on vacation he somehow had to compete with Kinn. Of course, staying at the resort wasn’t as so much a vacation as it was about making business deals. But normally, there always had been some time to relax as well – especially since Kinn hadn’t accompanied them on this trip for years. However, this year everything had changed because his uncle had decided to retire and now, Kinn was here as the perfect heir of the empire which ruined Vegas’ mood from the get-go.

While Vegas is supposed to go after his cousin Kinn, he meets Pete who immediately intrigues him. However, Pete seems to be able to see right through him which isn't something Vegas is used to. So he tries to make sense of this thing between them that he has never experienced before - a genuine romance.
Unfortunately, Vegas is his biggest enemy and keeps pushing Pete away. But Pete doesn't comply with that and keeps coming closer - dangerously close. And Vegas will have to decide if he takes the risk to have feelings for the other one or if he will keep trying to please his father.Series

He can see it in the way he sleeps with his legs moved to the side leaving a space at the bottom of the bed open. He can see in the way after he makes himself breakfast he opens the cabinet below the counter for a nonexistent bag of kibble.
He can see it in the corner of the living room, a dog bed sitting innocently with toys and a leash piled on top, still not taken out of the apartment.

Pete made a decision then, one that he knew would keep him as safe as he could be. He vowed to give this man a wide enough berth to never, ever end up on his radar. That was vital, integral even. Pete couldn’t afford to be there. Not when that man walked with the confidence of someone who knew how to take what they wanted and didn’t care for opposition. The second Vegas had entered the hallway, that red shirt cascading down his lithe frame that Pete was not fooled into believing held no strength, Pete’s face morphed into the most clueless, the least capable expression he could think of. Like breathing, he let it wash over him, watched Vegas spare him a brief glance before instantly skipping ahead to follow his father.
“What was that?” Arm asked to his right, the raised eyebrow letting Pete know exactly how much of that non-interaction Arm had noticed.
“Nothing.”
“That wasn’t nothing.”
“Let’s call it precaution, then,” Pete said, refusing to elaborate.
