The smooth manila surface is disrupted only by the hasty scrawl of a lower receptionist, but the label is enough to make his brow twitch in annoyance.

Summary
Two fluffy grey cat ears peek up from Alhaitham’s hair and he can barely make out a tail draped across the Grand Sage’s seat.
“You may continue.” Alhaitham says, his usual composed expression in place as if there’s absolutely nothing abnormal here.
Alhaitham with cat ears. That’s it. That’s the fic.

Alicent sighs. “I do not know. We were friends many years ago.”
At least, Alicent likes to think they were friends. But the princess was always sporadic with her attentions— quick to grow bored of things, discarding the old in favor of the new. Alicent supposes that’s what happened to her, as well. She had written letters, those first few moons after she returned to Oldtown.
The princess never responded.

Alicent is not a son. She is not a knight. Her presentation was surely a mistake, one that’s cost her everything. Now she is her brother’s squire, accompanying him to King’s Landing as he competes for the princess's hand.

At the celebration feast, Nilou asked Cyno if he would be happy continuing to be the General Mahamatra.
Cyno said, “It’s not about being happy. There are merely a lot of things that I must do.”
Alhaitham can’t say for certain why Cyno’s words bothered him. In a way, the sentiment is unsurprising; Cyno is, after all, dutiful to a fault. It makes sense that he puts his work over himself. Even so, Alhaitham wonders what the shape of Cyno’s happiness would be, if he allowed it to take form. If he ever allowed someone like Alhaitham to witness it.
Which he certainly never would.
Or: In the midst of the Akademiya’s rebuilding, Nahida sends her closest advisors on a trip through Sumeru.

Summary
Venturing into the desert after runaway thesis students is, unfortunately, a normal part of Cyno's job. The same can't be said of Alhaitham, feeble scholar extraordinare, and yet he's here anyway. It's an addition Cyno doesn't need, no matter how helpful Alhaitham can be, but though the company's better than expected, the complications only get worse from there.

He was wearing one on his back right now, custom stitched onto his jacket. He had asked for that. Wanted it. Paid money for it.
Maybe Standard was afraid of another man fucking his wife the way he used to be afraid of scorpions.

“And I still stand by that decision. It’s not exactly what I have in mind,” Alhaitham says as he squeezes Cyno’s wrist, his thumb caressing the skin right on his pulse.
Cyno has had a bad case of insomnia for a week now and it's taking a toll. A chance encounter with Alhaitham gives him help and a new perspective.

In the dream, he's half-sitting, nude, on a bed of embroidered pillows, the heavy curtains around him a deep shade of red. Red, dream-Haitham's favourite color; red like Cyno's eyes.
The scent of incense and ripe fruit is strong in the air and he finds himself lazily plucking a grape from one of the platters before a dark hand reaches out and takes it away from him just to hand-feed him a second later.
The tension between Alhaitham and Cyno culminates in a series of dreams, prompting Alhaitham to take matters into his own hands.

Summary
“Anyway, informing you of my condition is only partly the reason I ask you to meet me today," Alhaitham starts calmly but his eyes remain sharp on Cyno. “I’d also like to ask for a favor.”
“A favor?” Cyno repeats. He already has an inkling where this is going with their current topic and, even though he’s in disbelief that this is happening at all, he’s going to make Alhaitham be the one to say it.
Though at the quirk of Alhaitham’s lips, Cyno feels like he has already lost.
“I’d like you to help with my heat in three weeks.” Alhaitham asks, point blank and unabashed.
In which Alhaitham asks Cyno for his help with his heat. It isn’t the first time Cyno helps a friend out in this nature and yet, it gives him pause. Alhaitham would really just like to get this over with.

“One scholar’s complaint should not doom an ancient ruin,” Candace says frantically. “The domain is a priceless remnant from King Deshret’s kingdom. It’s a cultural artifact that belongs to the Sands!”
“This domain sits far from any authority that can keep the area safe,” Cyno says.
“It’s far from Sumeru City’s authority, you mean,” Candace retorts.
“It’s far from the Matra’s offices,” Cyno corrects. “It’s the Matra that keeps scholars safe. And it is the Matra that rescues anyone trapped in domains.”

Kaveh goes missing on an expedition to the desert, leading to a tense reunion amongst the desert gang. It’s a headache fueled by conflicting motivations. Aside from finding the missing party, Cyno wants order, Candace wants them gone, Dehya wants everyone to get along–
And Alhaitham just wants Cyno to himself.

Summary
It stares at Alhaitham with familiar, ruby-red eyes.
I’m dreaming again, Alhaitham realizes. He must be, because he’s completely alone in this lake, and it’s come alive with the rhythmic chorus of songbirds and cicadas. Dozens of variegated frogs suddenly surface around the boulder, barely breaking the water’s edge as they watch and wait to see what he’ll do next.
The Jeweled Axolotl blinks twice, then cocks its head.
“Am I supposed to follow you?” Alhaitham asks.
It blinks again, then dips into the water with a gurgle.

Alhaitham finds himself on the wrong side of a conflict to drain an ancient lake. Feeling powerless, he resigns himself to going along with the Akademiya's wishes.
That is, until the lake begins speaking to him in his dreams.
