Fyn sits, fists pressing into their thighs, heartbeat too loud in their ears. They should feel bad. They should back off. Teddy's right, they're making up stories to make themselves feel better, and it's making things worse– per usual. Shut up, finish laundry, give Teddy their bed for the night, sober up on the couch and apologize in the morning. That's all they need to do.

Summary
Martin knows how he should feel about his lot in life—terrible. He should feel terrible.
After all, he’s trapped in a dungeon with a hungry god who will one day eat him, regardless of how either of them feel about the prospect. Martin should feel terrified and miserable as he’s slowly fattened up for the big event. He should be clawing at the walls, desperate to escape.
There’s also quite a few things he shouldn’t be doing. He shouldn’t feel sorry for the god; he shouldn’t find him oddly sweet; he shouldn’t want to feed him.
He should not agree when the god offers to play into his most humiliating fetishes in order to make him feel better about his impending death. (Even if he did agree, it definitely shouldn’t work.)
And most of all, definitely he shouldn’t fall in love with the divine being that’s going to gobble him up whole. That wouldn’t make any sense at all.

In the light of his desk lamp, Martin can see the fine sheen of sweat clinging to his forehead and neck. “Sorry,” Jon apologizes, though he seems like he’s not sure what even he’s apologizing for. “I don’t know what’s wrong with me.” His fingers tremble lightly as he sips from his mug. That’s progress, at least. Jon doesn’t fight him anymore when Martin makes him tea, doesn’t force Martin into puppeteering him into drinking it — perhaps he’s finally accepted that it’s just tea, and not poison or spiders or...whatever he thought it was. Jon is a very paranoid man. Martin’s never found Beholding’s type to be particularly rational.
It’s almost endearing, when Jon acts like he has no idea what’s happening to him.
Martin reaches over and eases the mug from his hands to keep him from spilling it. “You’re hungry, Jon,” he says helpfully. “You need to eat.”It is simply in the Web's best interest that the Archivist remains well fed.

Martin feels so nervous that he’s almost dizzy with it. He desperately wants to turn tail and run, to call this whole thing off. Except for how he knows he’d be mad at himself for weeks afterwards for doing it, maybe even months. He’s spent so long working himself up to this; is he seriously not even going to try?
Even though it’ll probably go terribly? a pessimistic voice in the back of his head chimes in.
“This is going to go great,” Martin mutters underneath his breath. “Just grand. Nothing’ll go wrong, you’ll see.”
He feels a flash of self consciousness, but none of the other passengers give him so much as a glance for muttering to himself, all of them either hiding away in headphones and earbuds or just dead eyed glazed over expressions as they stare blankly into the middle distance. None of them even suspect that he’s on his way to a kink club.

There are certain assumptions that one makes about a person, based on their outward, clothes-on appearance. Which means that Martin gets...a bit of a surprise, the first time he sees Jon stretch himself up to reach something on a high shelf. Specifically, he's surprised when Jon’s shirt comes untucked, and instead of the flat plane of abdomen that Martin would have expected, a small roll of fat peeks out over his waistband, escaping where it must have been pinned down by the rigid line of his belt.
And then Martin has to leave the room and go find somewhere he can stand with his hand pressed over his mouth for a while.
