Summary
With her senses so preoccupied, she doesn't register the presence of someone else. Not at first. Not until she feels the warmth of another body settling down right next to her.
In her eyeline she catches a glimpse of two legs outstretched beside her. A pair of the dorkiest brown hiking shoes she's ever seen. One socked ankle, one metal ankle.
Abbot.

Summary
Samira Mohan ended up on night shifts mostly out of necessity.
She knows what angry, grieving bosses are like. She has spent the last year enduring Robby’s unpredictable tutelage, never knowing whether she was going to get Robby, her mentor, or Robby, Adamson’s grieving mentee. She doesn’t blame Robby, of course not. It’s unfathomable the decisions he had to make. But it doesn’t make it fair.
And now, here she is, about to get stuck with another angry, grieving boss.

Summary
Samira and Jack had sex at medical conference in New York almost four years ago. They did not exchange last names, or indeed any other pertinent biographical information.
Dr Samira Mohan, intern, has a three year old daughter.
Unsurprisingly, these two facts are connected.

Summary
“Hey.”
Samira’s shoulders drop at the familiar voice, and despite the fatigue tugging her down and the horror of whatever the fuck is in her hair, a smile creeps onto her face. She turns to look at Jack, walking from the door over to her with his arms crossed over his chest.
The company is the only good part of a night shift, in her opinion.

Summary
“How do you not have a date for this, anyway? You’re…”
He glanced back at her, eyebrows raised, not sure where she is going with this but hopeful. “Going to finish presenting your diagnosis, Dr. Mohan?”
“Never mind. The cockiness explains it.”
He gave her a crooked grin, “I asked my sister, but she said she’d rather be my patient.” He turned serious. They were on her block now. “I may have downplayed it. Didn’t want to spend this charming anniversary with someone who didn’t go through it. And didn’t want to drag someone who went through it to this dog and pony show.” He glanced sideways at her. “You were the first person I thought of. We worked together almost the whole night. You deserve this honor even if the wrong people are giving it in the wrong way. But just because you can handle one jackass-“ he gestured at himself, “doesn’t mean you want to be in a room with four hundred more.”
With Robby not exactly PR material, Dr. Jack Abbot finds himself the reluctant but compelling face of the hospital’s capital campaign in the wake of PittFest. As black tie events become an excuse to spend more time with a certain Dr. Samira Mohan, he wonders if the role doesn't have some benefits.

Summary
In the Pitt, a hundred seconds pass in the blink of an eye.
On Samira’s doorstep, where Jack Abbot now stands — slightly winded, skin pink with a barely-there sheen of sweat, hazel eyes more brown than green under the stark hall lighting, posture rigid — each second flashes by as a series of loosely sketched frames. She thinks back to the shitty little flip book she’d made in her art elective her sophomore year of high school: a figure shrinking with every page as it walks away.
There’s a figure at her door, and the seconds dissolve into frames again.

Summary
A full smile blooms on Abbot’s face. “Dr Mohan, you have your own go-bag?!” He looks absolutely delighted as she rolls her eyes and reaches down to her backpack, fighting her own smile.
“You don’t get the goods if you make fun of me, Dr Abbot.”
His right hand moves from his leg to rest over his heart. His eyes dance at her as his features slip into a farcical mask of shock.
“Hey hey, woah woah, this is awe I’m giving you, baby!”

Summary
All that to say, it was difficult for him to understand just how Samira Mohan seemed to sneak up on him. How she managed to take root in his life as if she’d been planted there beside him all along.
In hindsight, he could see that finding her red-eyed and flustered had been the beginning of something. He had, unthinkingly, taken the leap from professional to personal. Jack hadn’t seen it that way. His mental file on Samira Mohan was long; nowhere within it had he noted that she was the type to cry at work or leave early.
Jack was worried about her. So what?

Summary
Abbot lifted his head to look down at her. “See, that’s the post-traumatic stress. Something happens that your brain decides is a life or death situation. You have a massive adrenaline kick while it’s all happening, and then when it’s bleeding out of you on the comedown, your brain throws out anything that’s not completely vital. The amount of car crash patients we have who don’t even remember coming to the ER when they submit requests for their medical records for insurance… the brain’s a weird thing, Mohan.”
“Yeah,” she said, shooting him a look out of the side of her eyes. “It can even make you convinced you have to hurt yourself in order to seek external validation when the most logical course of action is rest.”
He snorted softly, shaking his head and leaning it back. “God,” he muttered, his cheeks stained pink. “Robby was right. You should have gone into psych.”
