But he had the sort of ambitions, those desires to reach out and fix things that couldn’t be fixed, that would leave him in a situation like this. The front of his robes are covered in pink and red, fresh smears overlaying rust-dried stains. Xingchen carries himself like he is a few steps away from collapse, exhausted enough that his posture is wrong, like fatigue and distress have overridden long trained muscle memory to keep one’s back straight and one’s core flexible.

Xichen closes his eyes. For a second, Jin Guangyao is afraid he might cry. Instead, he reaches out and closes the distance between their hands, grasping tightly like he thinks Jin Guangyao may disappear.
Lan Xichen squeezes Jin Guangyao’s hand once more, then releases it. “Ah, a’Yao,” he says, “I fear it is not in your power.”
It has been six months since the death and banishment of the Yiling Laozu, and Lan Xichen has not been acting like himself.
