Mike Wheeler hasn't talked to Will Byers in months. It's been a whole year since his best friend of 12 years went insane- Spitting out nonsense about monsters and other dimensions. No one saw it coming, and it has never sat right with Mike.
A day after this awful anniversary, though, Mike receives a visitor: A girl who calls herself Eleven.Eleven steps into Mike's mind and shows him the truth: Will was never the crazy one after all. Somehow, by some great means, Vecna has erased any memory of the Upside Down from all the minds of Hawkins.
Mike, Will, and El restore the original party to face the terrors of Vecna's influence once again, but when Vecna starts altering Will's own memories as a last attempt at power, things get confusing.
Now the question is: What more does Vecna want? Will Mike and the others be able to help Will hold on much longer? Will Byers was so skeptical about the move, deep down he knew he needed a fresh new start, away from his friends who were distancing themselves, and especially away from Michael Wheeler, his first love. He was sure he wasn't in love with the boy anymore, but his heart still hurt from their constant arguments and the words he had yelled at Will in the rain that night.

“The name is Boris, by the way,” Boris grinned, taking one of the cigarettes out of the pack. “And you are?”
“Will,” he replied. Boris nodded his head, placing the cigarette in between Will’s lips.
Will froze. He wasn’t expecting that. And he certainly wasn’t expecting Boris to be looking at him so intimately, his dark eyes scanning over. Perhaps he was just being friendly to someone in need.
“Will. Short for William, no?” Boris looks down at his lips and then back up. Will felt like his soul was being stared into, his cheeks beginning to burn up.
“Yeah but,” Will mumbled around the cigarette in his mouth, watching Boris pull out a lighter from his pocket. “No one calls me William. It’s a stupid name.”
Boris lit Will’s cigarette. “What? I think William is a beautiful name.”

“We’re friends,” Mike says defensively. The implications of Will’s words aren’t lost on him, so for good measure, Mike emphasizes, “We’re friends, Will.”
“Yeah well, we used to be best friends, Mike!” Will shouts, and his voice cracks again.

In the aftermath of the Battle of Starcourt, Owens immediately sends the Byers and El away from Hawkins with specific instructions to not contact anyone until things have cooled down.
