Jullus grits his teeth at the weighted stare, but he refuses to flinch. “That’s why we train. We’re soldiers, not civilians. We’re meant for endurance.”
“Yes, and endurance has limits.” Without looking away, Faustus slides the clipboard back into its assigned spot at the side of Jullus’ cot with a pointed clatter. “That, the Empire fully knows given the existence of my role.”
“Then won’t you agree that meeting those limits is a necessity to achieve progress.”
Unblinking, the gaze that remains on him takes him back to when the airship shuttle’s observation ports first opened. Of the light of Gyr Abania slicing into their cabin, now resting on him like a weighted blade. Like everything else about him, they simply observe – there’s no kindness nor is there cruelty. Just control and measure. A measure that meets its match when the doctor blinks and looks away.
For a victory, Jullus hates how hollow it feels.
Three years before the Final Days, before one becomes known as the Warrior of Light and the other watches their nation and ideals fall to ruins, a Decurio and a Medicus meet in Castrum Abania.
