“Oh,” says Riza. It sinks in, realization dawning like the sun cresting the mountainside. “Oh, that is a problem.”
Or: the one where Roy asks Riza to teach him to dance so that he can teach Edward, and it’s all hopeless from there.

‘‘I used to think Fullmetal was a crude nod at your prosthetics…’’
Roy Mustang’s words were laced with a thoughtful hum, and Edward tried not to feel hurt by the misassumption. Many heard his title and assumed it came down to his automail arm and leg. Ed had just hoped the Colonel – after everything – would’ve been different; that Mustang would’ve looked past Edward’s ill-fitting uniform and cripplingly-heavy automail and only see him as a person.
‘‘But,’’ Mustang continued, pensive, ‘‘I think they spelled your title wrong. You’re not Fullmetal, you should be Fullmettle. As in, you are full of mettle.’’
Edward blinked, utterly baffled.
‘‘Mettle, kid. M-E-T-T-L-E.’’
Mustang spelled it out for him. Literally. A genuine smile tugged at the Colonel’s lips as he rumbled out a fleeting chuckle, affectionately sweeping a hand over the top of Edward's golden crown. The boy's throat constricted as an annoying warm blur suddenly invaded his vision. He had experienced more kind words and actions under this man’s brief command than he had experienced in a long, long time.
It was just a shame that it was only a temporary arrangement.

“No, dummy. Thunderstorm did.” Winry says, and as if waiting for a cue, the thunder rumbles again. Ed’s eyes widen as it does, his breath hitching. He turns away again. )

Oh, hell. “Multiple?” Roy says.
“Hundreds,” says Edward. “I’m a Philosopher’s Stone.”
Edward Elric is a boy who knows a little bit about everything. He dabbles in a wide assortment of hobbies and skills, regardless of how niche or outdated they may be. Some days he’s himself; other days the kid stares off into space, zoned out so severely that it takes hours to snap him out of it.
Roy always thought it strange. But teenagers are strange, aren’t they? Being a prodigy of alchemy doesn’t make Edward an exception.
But it’s not that simple.
On the brink of death, Roy is saved by his subordinate from what should have been a fatal wound, and in the process begins to understand.

The kid’s voice finally breaks open, raw and wet and scared. It strikes Roy’s core deeper than any bullet. Any knife.
Any impact.
Ed’s glare comes down on him fiercely. Roy is about to earn it.
A mission goes very, very wrong.

It was almost enough to make him laugh, the absurdity of it all.
It really was true—people spent so much time and energy worrying about what others might think of them, forgetting that they, in turn, did the same. Most of the things they felt insecure about in themselves, other people never even saw—not because they were indifferent, but because they were too busy worrying about their own insecurities.
That was how they had been able to hide the truth about Al‘s body from most people for so long, after all.
Five times Edward tries to hide his issues and is surprised that it actually works. Plus one time it doesn't.

he didn't see anything move, but he felt it. the steady weight of winry’s hand, the cool metal against his scalp. the sharp blades that got closer and closer. he could imagine the scene, the two of them. winry’s mouth furrowed in concentration, his teeth clenched and cold. his eyes blank and heavy, her rigor-mortis eyes locked on the long braid down his back. he could taste it now. the scissors had slid their way into his mouth and there was metal cutting through his tongue. it curled into his throat and he choked.
