The fireflies moved about in the overgrowth of the yard. Visible then gone. Visible then gone. His own surname was based on lights. Shiranui. Will O’ the Wisps are what some people called them. Ghost lights. Phantom Fire. Genma laughed. He himself was like a spirit now. No one knew. He was free. He smiled. No one would ever know.

Somehow, this is everything I've ever wanted to read, yet never knew I needed? A wonderful Genma, and I wish I could just fold these words up and stuff them between my lungs. Fics that make me feel like I've been doused with cold water when I realize they're not canon are so rare, and it's always a pleasure to find a hidden gem like this.

Iruka watched, transfixed, as a kid flew past him on his bike. His laughter echoing off the close buildings, wind whipping his hair back in a halo of light in the afternoon sun. A few other kids followed behind at a more reasonable pace, unable to free themselves from the fear of crashing.
Iruka’s new friends Kotetsu and Izumo came up beside him fighting about something dumb before they noticed Iruka watching as the bikes vanished around the bend at the end of the street.
“Watch out for them. The upperclassmen will just mow you down if you get in their way. Especially Genma. He’s the worst of the bunch.”
“He’s part siren,” Kotetsu said, his hand cupped around his face as if exchanging a secret. Izumo snorted.
“He’s not part siren Ko. Siren’s don’t exist.”
“Yes, they do. His father’s one too.” Kotetsu said shoving at Izumo who shoved back.
“He looked so free.” Iruka’s voice was quiet. He couldn’t shake the brief flash of joy and freedom he had seen on the older kid's face.Bookmarked by wuki
