“The witch must die! She will burn!” Cage yells, and then something happens. A shift in the air. A hush over the crowd.
“She will not,” a deep voice replies.
Clarke turns to the smoldering bones of her home. To the figure standing in the doorway, outlined in flames. It’s inhumanly tall, well-muscled, unclothed but for the shadows that curl around its limbs like loyal pets. Its eyes burn red as the embers it stands on.
“Beast! What do you want with us?” The reply is a low laugh that heats Clarke from the inside out.
“What do I want?” the demon repeats, and it smiles, teeth glinting bone white and sharp as knives in the flickering light. “Only what’s mine.”
