“Woah,” Darry says as he sits down across from Pony. Shit, here we go, Pony thinks. “You look awful.”
“Thanks,” he mumbles, trying to take a bite of his eggs to throw his brother off.
“Seriously,” Darry insists, his ice-blue eyes wide and worried. It makes Pony's stomach turn even more. “You look horrible. What's wrong? Are you sick?”
“No,” he's quick to reply, shaking his head. “I'm fine."
His brother doesn't believe him for even a second. “What's the matter?”
“Nothing, Darry, I'm just tired,” he tries. It sticks, just a bit. “Didn't really sleep.” That was true enough. He had spent most of the night trying not to cough and trying to wish his mother back to life.
Darry's eyes return to a normal size, but he still looks over him skeptically as he takes a long sip from his coffee. Pony knew there was no way in hell Darry couldn't hear him screaming at the top of his lungs last night, and he knew the nightmares freaked Darry out just as much as they scared him.
