Despite growing up seeing red strings, Trucy's dad never allowed her to follow his. Which was fine, until she met who it connects to. Now the only thing she has to do is get them together.

Notes:

Originally written in 2021, this series got abandoned as we lost our passion for Ace Attorney, but I decided to revamp this one and we will hopefully write out those sequels we had planned.

Chapter Text

Trucy knew she was special, it was hard not to. Okay that made her sound conceited, but it was true! You don’t earn the title “Child Of Magic” over nothing.

For example: Not very many people had a life size puppet, or could pull a car tire out of a pair of panties, or see the strings that signified soulmates.

That was the main thing though, the strings of fate. See, almost everyone had one, but only a few people could see them. When she asked her father, he shrugged and told her it must be part of her magic. When he’d adopted her, he’d thought it was an odd joke, and shrugged it off when she’d asked about his soulmate.

So Trucy decided to leave it alone. Normally she was one to meddle but there were plenty of other people with soulmates to put together. Plus, no matter how far she followed the string, it just kept going, and she had a curfew to be home by.

So it was fine, she could ignore her curiosity and help others, it wasn’t like she could do anything about the forever long string. The little girl focused on other things, like her own lack of string, or her various magic shows, or the fact Daddy was finally introducing her to his childhood friend.

Trucy figured the former should bug her, she read somewhere that less than 20% of people didn’t have soulmates, but she was busy with magic, and she had plenty of people who loved her. And “Miles” visiting was a lot more interesting than either of those things.

After all, if she couldn’t meddle with her dad’s love life, maybe she’ll have more luck meddling in the mysterious Prosecutor’s. Not that she could admit that outloud, she’s sure Phoenix wouldn’t be a fan of that idea. He generally tried to keep her from meddling in anyone’s love life, which was super unfair if you asked her. What’s the point in seeing red strings of fate anyways if she can’t do anything about it?

Apparently, the answer was gape in shock the first time you accompany your dad to the airport. For the first time in her life, Nick’s string was tightening, whoever was on the other side was getting closer.

“Truce, you okay?”

Trucy looked up at her dad, snapping out of the momentary shock, “Yeah! I just… wow, how long have you guys known each other?”

“Edgeworth? Since...third grade, I think?” He answered, scratching his head through the beanie, “This is your first time meeting him, huh?”

“I wasn’t sure you had friends besides Maya!”

“Hey!” Nick frowned, “You’ve met Larry! And Kristoph and…” he trailed off, trying to think of another friend, “...I’m friends with Lotta Hart.”

“I’m just saying it’s a little surprising, I know you have more than one friend.”

“You know, just because I lost my badge doesn’t mean I lost my friends. Edgeworth and Franziska just...are overseas.”

“So you have… five friends?”

“I have...at least five friends,” Phoenix said.

Trucy conceded and instead focused on looking down at the string that she had grown used to ignoring over the years. She could tell whoever it was had to be near.

Then it happened, Phoenix brightened. Following his eyes also followed the red string, straight to...a man in a pink suit and coat, pulling a suitcase. On the man’s pinkie was the string she’d tried to follow for so many years. Plain as day, even with the little bow that her dad’s had.

“Wright,” Miles(she assumed) sighed, clearly relieved as he approached the hedgehog man, “You would not believe the flight I had. Seriously, after-” he paused, just then noticing the small brunette, “Oh, you brought your daughter.”

“Yeah, she’s a brat to babysitters,” her Daddy smiled affectionately down at her, his hand on her back, “Plus I had to prove I have five friends.”

Trucy smiled up at Phoenix, trying her best to not freak out too obviously about the string, “I knew you had friends!” put on a show she reminded herself, “I just figured you weren’t close to anyone but Maya”

“She’s quite perceptive I see,” he joked, crouching to be at her eye level and extending his hand, “Hello, it is a pleasure to finally meet you, I’m Miles Edgeworth, I’m a friend of your father’s.

Trucy shook the man’s hand, “I’m Trucy Wright! Child of… Fate!”

Phoenix paused at that, “I thought it was Child of Magic, you aren’t changing your whole shtick are you?”

“Just considering it,” she answered, “I want to keep my options open.”

“A smart businesswoman too,” Miles stood brushing imaginary dust off his suit, “Well, Child of Fate, your father speaks of you often.”

“Daddy,” she whined, taking her dad’s hand in an attempt to touch the string, maybe a little tug would help, “You’re embarrassing me.”

She did manage to get a hold of the string, but her dad didn't react. He rolled his eyes and asked, "Now I'm not allowed to be talk about you?"

Trucy huffed, "You don't have to talk about it all the time!"

Miles smiled at Trucy, "I assure you Miss Trucy, it's not all the time, just most of it"

“That’s not any better,” she sighed, fiddling with the string.

Nick glanced down, only now noticing the shifting pressure on his hand. He couldn’t see the string, but he could feel it being toyed with. He considered pulling his hand away, but didn't want to upset her, so he let his magic daughter play with the magic string.

"Mr. Edgeworth," Trucy blinked up at the man, suddenly stepping away from her dad to talk to the man, "do you believe in soulmates?"

“Trucy-” her daddy started.

“I suppose I’ve never thought about it,” the prosecutor hummed, “I’ve certainly heard about them, but I’ve never been too interested in the matter.” Remembering he’s talking to a child, he added, “But I am positive they’re real.”

Trucy nodded, considering pulling the string. Or, pulling it harder than she had been. Considered yanking it with all her body weight to see them smash into each other.

“Trucy,” Phoenix scolded softly, “Don’t.”

“Don’t…?” Miles repeated curiously, “What is she doing? Or...planning on doing?”

Trucy smiled charmingly, insisting, "Nothing!"

The man in pink asked, “Oh, is it one of your magic tricks? I’ve heard those must be kept secret.”

Nick frowned at his daughter, "something like that"

“It’s a fate thing, not a magic thing,” she explained, “But daddy doesn’t want me to talk about it.”

"A…fate thing?" Miles repeated, looking positively puzzled at her. She assumed that he would have been used to antics after such a long friendship with her dad, but now she wondered if perhaps she was mistaken. In any case, she couldn’t take it back now, so she doubled down.

“I’m the Child of Fate, remember?”

“Oh, yes, I...I do,” Edgeworth looked up at his long term friend, clearly confused.

Phoenix opened his mouth to speak, but Trucy cut him off, "I can sometimes see where people are destined to be is all, Daddy doesn't like when I try to get involved with fate though"

“Phoenix,” Miles started, clearly hesitant, “Where...did you meet her?”

“A case,” Nick sighed, “She’s from a family of magicians.”

“Ah…” Edgeworth nodded, “that helps.” She wasn’t sure what he meant by that, but then he smiled and said, “Be sure to use your visions to keep Wright out of trouble, okay?”

Trucy smiled at that, "I do my best!"

“Miss Fey too.”

“Of course!”

For a moment, Trucy was sure her dad would say something that would give her an in, but instead, he had looked toward the exit. Before he even opened his mouth Trucy realized she was about to lose her window, so she asked. “Mr Edgeworth, can I see your hand?”

Miles paused a moment, glancing at Phoenix, before extending his hand. Phoenix just seemed exasperated, so it likely wasn’t going to be anything malicious. Perhaps this little magician would read his palm and tell him some delightful story about his future, after all she seemed too young to be interested in trying to swindle him out of some pocket change.

Trucy reached forward, focused on his pinkie finger, then, with no warning, she tugged on the space in front of it. Miles winced at the pressure and stumbled slightly, noticing that Phoenix nearly fell as well.

“What was that?” he frowned, inspecting his hand, “Some sort of magic trick?”

Trucy shook her head, beaming, "It's your string of fate!"

“My...I beg your pardon?”

"It links you to your soulmate? It is supposed to-“

“No, I...I’m familiar with the concept.”

"Yeah," Trucy nodded, "and I just pulled on yours!”

“They aren’t...Trucy, those aren’t real.” the prosecutor explained softly, trying to let her down gently, even crouching slightly to be at face level with her. He could see Phoenix behind her looking apologetic, but Miles couldn’t quite understand why.

"Then what did I pull?" Trucy countered, putting her hand on his, "you felt me pull the string, didn't you?"

“I simply...lost my balance,” he denied, “Even if you had, why would you have done that?”

"Because I can see where it leads."

“And where would that be, Miss Wright?”

Trucy smiled, smug as she turned on her heel to gesture boldly to her father, and Miles felt his stomach drop as she declared, "To daddy"

“Trucy,” Phoenix interjected, beet red, “That’s- that’s enough.”

Edgeworth grabbed his own elbow, turning away in an attempt to hide his blushing face, “Very funny, Miss Wright.”

"I'm serious!" Trucy pouted, "I can see it!"

“Trucy,” The ex-defense attorney repeated, “Stop it.”

She wilted, unused to being scolded by Nick and frustrated that they didn’t believe her, “...fine.”

Trucy was quiet the rest of the way home, even after Miles was dropped off at his fancy looking hotel. She had to plot out what to do to prove to her dad that he and Miles were meant to be together.
