The moment their hands touched, Miss Baker’s composed air shifted just a tad, a minute shudder rippling across the surface of a still pool. When that shudder expanded towards him, however, it encountered the riverbank — lapping against the slope, unable to travel further.
A Finding of soulmates was supposed to be a momentous occasion, said to be filled with profound rightness. Instead, all he felt in the moment was Miss Baker’s assured grip.
Denial is impossible when the evidence is written on one’s skin.

"You know, I always thought I'd live somewhere with lots of people around," Olruggio tells him. The wine in his vessel is a rich pink colour. Qifrey made them olives and cheese with cabroccoli wrapped in ham for a late-night snack, but the pleasure was in the making, not in the eating. He sips his own vessel, listening. "But it's really nice out here, isn't it? Peaceful. Good for focussing."
"I think you would be even more of a hermit, if you had the choice," Qifrey says. "Lost in your work for weeks on end."
Olruggio looks sheepish, rubbing the back of his neck with his free hand. "You're probably right. I never thought I'd be that kind of person, either… weird how much things change, isn't it?"
"And how much they stay the same," Qifrey murmurs.
A temporary fix-it.

He sounded terribly embarrassed. Qifrey giggled, half in endearment and half mind-numbing relief. “Right,” he murmured, fingers relaxing by a fraction. “Sorry. You used to be so affectionate with your hands.”

His breath passes through his body in cycles, and he allows himself to focus on it. The stretch in his muscles as his chest expands and back widens. Each inhale seems to unravel something in him, allowing the tension to bleed from his body.
Once more he observes Olruggio’s features, taking in the color of his eyes — an intriguing shade that reminds him of a star-filled sky — and the harsh line of his mouth. He observes the dark strands that fall across his forehead, the cut of his jawline, the bridge of his nose.
I want him and this life we built together.
I want to live.
