The Rhythm of Your Heart

Summary:

There has never been anyone in the world like you.
Whether the way you are is purely coincidence, or the choices you've made are merely fate, you somehow find yourself in quite interesting situations when you make the decision to join your closest friend in his town, which turns out to be a lot less ordinary than you thought it was at first.

Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

PUBLISHED: 17 July 2022

Yandere DSMP x reader

A folklore AU

ONLY THE CHARACTERS! (Not the content creators)

Mostly doesn't follow DSMP lore, but does refer to it and use it a lot

NO SMUT

MC has no gender, and is written as an asexual panromantic character

Not all characters will be yanderes or will have romantic feelings towards MC. Characters like Tommy and Tubbo will have platonic relationships, nothing more.

MC uses THEY/THEM and YOU/YOURS pronouns mostly.

MC has their own lore.

This is all mostly improvised. I have not written down any lore somewhere, it's just in my head kinda.

I have already written this in Word, so some things might seem off because they've been copied (and not everything wants to work the way I want to).

There is also a discord you can join, although it's also for my other books (An Unfinished Romance). You can find it here. If you want to make fanart of this story, you can send it in here, if you want to.

Last but not least, this story will have quite some dark content and whatnot and there will be mentions and/or descriptions of:

BLOOD

VIOLENCE

DEATH

OBSESSIVE BEHAVIOUR

TOXIC RELATIONSHIPS

And more.

I will attempt to put a trigger warning at the start of each chapter if it's needed, but I can't promise that I will be able to remember or to recognize when it's needed.

Now, let me start the prologue.

There has never been a silence louder than the one at the dining table with that one dad of yours. The weird one, the one out, the only one that doesn’t share the same interest as your other loving parents, who are now out following their hobby and passion for the paranormal. But no, this parent is different. This one is odd. Weird. Off-putting and confusing.

There has never been a family that you loved more than the one you’ve been adopted by. They started off as four, and are now five. With your loving mother, who’s always seemed to have had a closer connection with those who have passed, your curious father, whose talent mostly lies in handling the worst curses there are, your intelligent parent, who sees the future and the present with their extended knowledge on witchcraft, and your wise mother, who knows when to make a difficult decision that will lead to another one’s death, even if it’s for the sake of protecting the innocent.

There has never been a parent weirder than the one you’re sitting with right now.

X.D., his name is. And he’s been an odd person ever since he arrived. He’s freakishly tall – which isn’t necessarily a weird thing, it’s just outstanding considering he’s above two metres, which is not something you see very often in the small town you’re living in at the moment – and, unlike every other parent of yours, he does not have any occupation in the field of the paranormal or magic. At first when you met him, you assumed that this is because most people who choose something like that are ridiculed for it. It’s looked down upon, after all. But the more you’ve gotten to know him, the quicker you’ve realized that he’s not even interested in any of that stuff the slightest. It is not expected for your passionate parents to add someone to their relationship that does not at all have this same interest, and this has always stood out to you.

And then his name. X.D. According to him, it stands for Xantheus Darius, which is already kind of an abnormal name to begin with, but you don’t judge his name. No, what you’re judging is his behaviour. When he’s around you or your parents, he comes over as that awkward kind of person. The one that has no idea how to socialize with people. The one that just stands in a corner watching all the conversations. That’s how he acts around the family. But you’ve heard him act very different before. Talking over the phone in a language you have never managed to unravel nor recognize, to someone you don’t know, in such a threatening tone that you’ve never heard it before, not even on TV. And then his sister.

There has never been an aunt like aunt Drista.

Even if she’s an adult, she acts more like a teenager. She also has spoken the non-existent language and honestly, you at first assumed that it was probably some kind of a sibling-thing – something you cannot relate to, as an only child, even if you have tried to create one with your closest friend before, who you do consider to be your little brother. In any case, you feel like Drista is either more unique than her older brother, or X.D. is simply trying to hide a part of himself. The latter seems the more likely, although your other parents don’t realize. But at the same time, you don’t want to ruin their relationship. As sure as you are that X.D. is hiding something from them, you also have seen that they all care about him deeply, just like he seems to genuinely love them. And even if you feel a little uncomfortable around him, he also seems to consider you as his child, just as much as his partners do. You just wish that you knew more about him. You just wish that you knew his little secret.

“Does the dinner taste well?” X.D. suddenly asks and you look up with a silent nod. Usually, neither of you really talk to each other and just kind of sit around in an uncomfortable silence. But he tries, right? That’s all that counts, right? “So, uh, what are you going to study now you’re almost done with school?”

“I don’t know yet,” you shrug as you put some food in your mouth. “There are so many options but I don’t want to study for like thirty years.” X.D. chuckles quietly as he also eats a bit more.

“So, I suppose you’re not going to follow your parents’ footsteps?”

“Don’t take me wrong, I love them, but I don’t think I could ever do everything they do together, you know? But I also don’t want to choose just one of my parent’s job, so I’m probably just going to go to some universities and see what they have to offer.” The problem with school is that you’re good at every subject and there’s none that you like more than the other. Your ancient languages teacher wants you to study Greek and Latin, your philosophy teacher thinks that philosophy classes could be interesting for you, your English teacher wants you to do something with English… The only subject you’re bad at, is PE, but honestly, you’re just not that good at jobs. Ever since the incident at the mall in the town, which was responsible for around twenty deaths, you’ve had chest pains that bother you from time to time. You’ve never gone to the doctor for it, though, nor have you told anyone other than your closest friend.

“What’s Jared going to study?” The mention of his name makes you imagine your pale friend immediately.

“I’m pretty sure he’s not going to study anything. He told me he’s going to just start working at some random place. I have no idea what he has in mind, though.”

“So, no studying for him?”

“Nope. He said he can’t, for whatever reason. It probably has to do with all the classes he skipped at school. And they don’t have a university near his house either. He claims that it’s so he can follow his past life or some bullshit like that, though. He’s going to build stuff, he said. I don’t know. He’s not going to study though, because apparently his ‘past self’ didn’t do that.” X.D. remains silent for a moment, seemingly understanding something that you don’t. But he doesn’t go into it any further.

“Do you want me to look at some studies with you? Maybe I can help you out.”

“I don ‘t know yet. I’ll just see what happens, honestly.” As much as X.D. looks disappointedly, you know he’s not surprised by your answer. Studying isn’t exactly your priority, really.

The two of you finish your food in complete silence, neither really knowing what to say. So, you go upstairs, as you always do, where you find the black kitten your parents got you very recently for your birthday. Onyx, you’d named him. Onyx the black kitten. And you love him very much.

The black kitten has been running through the house all day, so you’re glad to finally find him curled up on your bed, sleeping peacefully next to your toddler-sized dog plushie. It immediately puts a smile on your face.

You lie down next to him and let out a deep sigh as you allow your fingers to slightly massage your head. As you put on some music, gently petting the cat on your bed, you quickly get called by your bestie Jared.

“Hey, hey! Guess who just binge-watched all the How To Train Your Dragon movies and the Shrek movies?”

“Me.”

“You too?”

“No, I was joking, you actual brainless blob,” you respond right away, making Jared mumble to himself quietly.

“Well, I did! And I keep forgetting how amazing those movies are. It’s probably just my nostalgia, though.” You chuckle, unsurprised by Jared’s enthusiasm, when he starts talking about how amazing Megamind is instead. It’s not unexpected, honestly. “You know, Y/N. I’ve been thinking… You should come live here sometime! When you’re done with studying or whatever boring ass job you’re going to end up getting, I mean. There’s this apartment complex and I’m sure we can get you a job! Oh my god, maybe we should work together! Hell yeah! There’s this convenience store that makes a lot of money for those cheap apartments, come on, Y/N, please!”

You look over at Onyx in silence and listen to the doors opening and your excited parents entering the house. “You know what? That might not even be that bad of an idea.”
