Chapter Text
Killua was nervous.
His hands were shaking as he attempted to knock on Gon’s door, but his nerves got the best of him, and he ended up just standing there frozen.
Killua recently asked Gon out on a date since they barely started summer break; he would never admit it but he was planning for this day since he came up with the idea.
He thought he would be courageous at doing something romantic like this, but here he was, his heart thumping in his chest and his palms sweaty as hell.
Damn! Why are you so nervous? You don't...want to keep him waiting, do you?
He quietly cursed under his breath, groaning in annoyance. You were the one who asked him out on a date! Why is this so hard!? Maybe he should just turn back, his motorcycle was right there anyways, along with an extra helmet, and some roses...
Killua sighed in frustration.
No, he can't chicken out now. He did a lot of work to make this perfect—no, that's not the point! He was already here, at Gon's apartment, with a bouquet of roses right behind him that was waiting to be given to the person he liked the most.
Okay okay, he shook his head, attempting to regain his composure. Killua took a deep breath and finally knocked on the door, his heart pounding loudly in his chest. Calm down, it's just going to be a quick, fun date and that's it. Nothing more.
After what felt like a million years, the door opened to reveal a dark-haired boy, a bright grin was planted on his face once his gaze landed on Killua.
“Hey, Killua!” Gon greets him, shutting the door behind him before looking back at the silver-haired boy, his sweet smile never leaving his face.
Killua felt his heart skip a beat.
“H-hey,” He cleared his throat, attempting to sound confident as he stuffed his hands inside his pockets. Suddenly he felt awkward. ‘ Say something, idiot!’ Killua scolded himself mentally.
“Sorry if I took a while,” Gon chuckles a little, a sheepish smile forming on his lips. Killua couldn’t help but swallow nervously, his lips trembling as he struggled to speak. “Aunt Mito kept nagging me about cleaning my room.”
Of course she did.
Killua wasn’t surprised—Gon had a habit of making his room ridiculously messy even after he cleaned his room the day before.
Gon would always complain to him about his aunt even if he loved her a lot. He usually said stuff like, ‘Cleaning my room is too much work! Can’t I do it some other day?’ or ‘I have the free will to choose when I want to clean my room!’ It was so dumb, but Killua loved it, he absolutely loved hearing him talk. On the phone, over text, in person—anything to hear Gon’s sweet voice.
“I-It’s fine,” Killua averted his gaze, feeling his face heat up as he tried to fight back a grin. Goddamnit.
“I don’t know why she’s so concerned about my room, I mean we just started summer break!” Gon complained, shutting the door behind him. He definitely didn’t want his aunt to hear him talk behind her back. “I have three months to clean it. Nothing bad will happen to it if I just leave it like that.”
With that, Killua snorted. Gon was so dumb—he’s so dumb and he hated that he loved every second of it.
“Roaches are gonna be in your pillow, Gon.” He couldn’t help but joke, and Gon punched his arm playfully in response, causing Killua to laugh. He felt his composure coming back, grateful that he had mustered up the courage to say something. “Don’t be mean, Killua! Roaches don’t scare me. My aunt Mito is scarier than roaches.” The boy chuckles a little, and Killua can’t help but break into laughter.
“You’re so dumb,” He snickers.
Gon pouts in response, hitting his arm again.
“And you’re so mean,” Gon replies.
Killua softly laughs again, feeling his chest warm up at the sight of Gon’s adorable little pout. Sometimes he acted like a little kid — he hasn’t changed since they were twelve.
He clears his throat a little, mustering up the courage to give Gon a shy, yet smug smile. “...You ready?”
“Yeah, let’s go!” Gon answered enthusiastically, stepping down the stairs as Killua silently followed behind him, his hands in his pockets. He felt his heart thump even harder with every step — he was hella nervous.
"Woah is that your motorcycle?!" The boy exclaimed, sprinting towards the black vehicle as his eyes lit up. He looked back at Killua, an excited expression on his face. ‘You’re so cool, Killua!’ he could imagine him saying that, with that same tone as when they first met at the skate park.
When he first fell in love.
The boy blushed in reply. He was completely enamored; so very much in love.
"Yeah," Killua murmured, stepping next to him, a soft gaze in his eyes. “When did you get a license?” Gon asked, scanning the slick-looking vehicle, then glancing back at the flustered silver-haired boy. “A while ago, Kurapika taught me how to drive it. She’s pretty, isn’t she?”
Gon nodded frantically, still in shock at the fact that Killua owned a motorcycle. “Yeah, she’s beautiful!”
Killua smiles. I think you’re a lot prettier than it, though.
“Oh, hey,” Gon spoke, motioning towards the bouquet of roses, which was planted in the back of the obsidian motorcycle. “Who are these roses for?”
Killua blinked. Oh, shit!
Instead of responding to Gon, he snatched the bouquet of roses, his cheeks flushed with embarrassment. He completely forgot about the pretty red flowers, he was too focused on the bright sun that was showering its hypnotizing rays on him- erm… he was lost in la-la land.
He couldn’t believe he was about to do this.
In response, Gon tilted his head in confusion, his eyes glistening with curiosity.
Oh, shit. I’m screwed, I’m really screwed. Killua couldn’t bring himself to say another word.
“Are they supposed to be for someone?” Gon questioned, tapping his chin with his finger. Killua began to panic, and he felt like he was holding back an internal scream of embarrassment. He wanted to run away, he didn’t want to give him the beautiful roses but at the same time, he did.
Yes, they’re for you.
“U-uh…yeah,” Killua uttered quietly, his voice barely audible as his face flushed completely red. He was sure he was the exact shade of the vibrant red roses, or perhaps even redder.
“Oh. I see.” Gon replied quietly.
For a moment, he looked somewhat disappointed. And that’s when Killua realized he had made a mistake.
He roughly cleared his throat, before mustering up the courage to hand him the bouquet of beautiful red roses.
Gon blinked with confusion, and his reaction caught him by surprise.
“For you,” Killua says softly.
Gon stared at him for a while, and for a second, his heart skipped a beat. He took a moment to stare at Killua, admiring his features; the gentle sparkle of his icy blue eyes, the way his soft silver hair fell into his face, and the way his cheeks turned pink in embarrassment.
The dark-haired boy couldn’t help but grin just a teensy bit. It was a silly, toothy grin, one that was filled with jumping, heart-fluttering joy.
Killua felt his heart flutter at the sight of Gon’s smile, and he couldn’t help but smile himself. It was a small gesture, but it meant everything to him. He had finally expressed his feelings for Gon, even though he didn’t say it out loud.
Suddenly Killua felt like he was in a movie. You know, those cheesy romantic moments in a movie where the guy hands the girl pretty flowers and says something suuuper lovey-dovey afterward? He felt exactly like that, except they were both dudes, and there was no way he was going to say something super romantic and cheesy to Gon. Not yet at least.
Gon’s smile grew wider as he smelled the roses; the scent was delicate and sweet, and it was a soft smell. It was a perfect way to describe how he felt right now. “They’re beautiful. Thank you.”
Killua shrugged it off, a soft smile on his face as he averts his gaze, “It’s nothing.”
But it was everything to Gon. It was a sign that Killua cared for him deeply, and it made his heart skip a beat. He didn’t know why, but it made him feel loved.
They stood there in silence, admiring the beauty of the roses and the significance of the gesture. It was a very special moment, and they both knew it. Gon couldn't help but feel a rush of emotions as he looked at Killua. He didn’t know why, but his heart began to thump against his chest and he felt his face grow hot with embarrassment.
“So, where are we going?” Gon asks, hugging the bouquet of roses against his chest as he tries to distract himself away from the unusual feeling. He always thought of Killua as a friend, so why was he feeling this way?
“Uh well,” Killua rubbed the back of his neck, his face still slightly pink. “What do you think of going to the amusement park? I heard from Alluka that there’s a new rollercoaster, and we can get some food afterward.”
Gon’s eyes lit up, and Killua couldn’t help but blush. He’s so cute. “Yeah, that sounds great! Alluka has such good taste.” The boy grins a toothy smile, his pretty hazel eyes glistening with excitement. Killua couldn’t tell whether it was from the soft rays of the orange sun, or out of genuine amusement and happiness.
Or perhaps, Gon was the sun—is the sun.
So bright, so full of light, and just so beautiful.
“Cool,” The silver-haired boy replies, his voice low and slurred. He tried his best to keep his composure, yet he felt like his heart was about to burst. Killua found himself falling harder and harder for Gon, but he tried to remain calm before doing anything he would regret later. He coughs slightly, stuffing his hands in his pockets as he steps towards his motorcycle motioning for Gon to follow him. “We should hurry up before the lines get too long,” Killua adds with a small, shy smile.
Gon nods frantically, a big toothy smile on his face. He quickly places the bouquet of roses onto the motorcycle’s basket, feeling his heart race with excitement. He was super excited, he could already taste the sweet food on his tongue—funnel cake was the first thing he was going to eat.
Killua got on the motorcycle, glancing at the dark-haired boy with a soft look on his face. Gon felt his heart skip a beat at the sight and quickly straddled the bike behind Killua, trying his best to control his embarrassment. Gon only sat there, on the leather seat, his body completely still like a statue.
“You’re gonna fall if you sit like that, you dumbass,” Killua snickers, reaching back to grab Gon's hands and pulling them around his waist. “I don’t want you getting into an accident,” He says, laughing a little. Gon’s face flushed red at the warm touch of his hands, and he felt his heart thump even harder against his chest.
Instantly, Gon's body relaxes against Killua's back, the rumble of the motorcycle feeling almost therapeutic beneath them.
“You must really care about me then,” Gon says quietly, his voice barely audible.
Killua was silent for a moment. ‘I do, I really do, I care about you so much’ was what he wanted to say, but he couldn't bring himself to say it out loud. It was at this moment that he wished he was as bold as Gon; Gon always had the guts to say anything he wanted.
So instead of saying something sweet, something he had held back in his chest for so long, he decides to be bogus.
“No, not really. I just don’t want to pay for your hospital bills because I’m broke as fuck.” Killua jokes cheekily. He really isn’t.
Gon could hear the smile in his voice; he knew he didn’t mean a single word.
“You’re really mean, Killua.” He murmurs with a pout, nuzzling his head against the surface of the boy’s leather jacket, the grip on Killua’s waist slightly tightening.
Killua chuckles softly at Gon's response, feeling his own heart warm at the way Gon snuggles closer to him. He can’t help but close his eyes, indulging himself in this sweet, tender moment.
“I know,” He says, his tone warm but still playful, “But I’ll buy you whatever you want at the carnival in exchange for being mean. We are on a date anyway.”
Gon takes a moment to register the words that just escaped Killua’s lips.
Date.
Gon felt his heart race as he realized that he was on a date with Killua.
Okay, maybe he technically wasn’t, but after this, he would be, and the thought terrified him. He never thought of Killua as anything other than just a best friend, so why did his heart skip a beat every time he smiled?
‘You just really like him as a friend’ He thought in the back of his mind, ‘You just adore him as a friend, nothing more’ He convinced himself, yet he felt like he was lying to himself. But he wasn’t, Killua was just a friend.
“Buy me funnel cake,” He lets out with a sudden dark, yet playful tone, and Killua can’t help but grin, his smile growing wider as he tries to hold back laughter. “Lots and lots of funnel cake.”
Killua laughs, “I can do that. And maybe some cotton candy too?”
Gon nods excitedly, feeling his nerves begin to fade away. “You’re not so mean after all,” He teases, nudging Killua lightly with his elbow.
Killua just shrugs, the cheesy grin still on his face. “I guess I can’t help it when I’m with you.”
Gon’s face flushed red, and he can’t help but bite his bottom lip afterward, feeling his heart swell with a mixture of unexplainable emotions. His stomach fluttered with butterflies, and he suddenly felt anxious. He playfully punches Killua’s shoulder; he’s not even trying.
“Ow,” Killua winced in mock pain, grabbing his shoulder, and causing Gon to laugh, “That really hurt. Why are you being so mean? Don’t make me reconsider my options.” He laughs, a playful spark glistening in the corner of his icy blue eyes. “Okay, okay, sorry.” Gon snickers; he knew it didn’t hurt. “I didn’t mean to. I’m sorry, I won’t do it again.”
Killua can’t help but laugh, this time glancing over his shoulder to look at Gon, a loving gaze in his eyes.
His gentle stare caught Gon off guard.
“You apologize too much,” Killua flicks Gon’s forehead with his finger, causing him to wince, “I’m just joking, you dummy.”
“That hurt!” Gon pouted, rubbing his forehead. “What the hell, Killua!?”
Killua laughs some more, his stomach clenching in pain. He tries to stop laughing but he can’t stop. No matter how hard he tries, he just can’t. He loves messing with Gon, his reactions were always priceless, and he loves every second of it.
Gon shoved his arm playfully as he continues to laugh, and it almost caused Killua to fall off the motorcycle.
“Fuck,” He curses, grasping onto the handles for support. Gon laughs at this, sticking his tongue out at the silver-haired boy, before choking on his saliva. “You little shit,” Killua laughs, an annoyed smirk on his face. He slapped Gon’s arm, which only caused him to choke some more. “I hate you.”
“Killua-” His sentence was cut off as he starts to violently cough between laughter, his face growing red as he tries to get a gasp of air.
“Oh shit,” Killua starts to pat his back roughly, laughing a little, “You good? Don’t die on me, I don’t have enough money for life support.” He really doesn’t.
Gon can’t help but laugh some more, his cheeks still adorably red, shaking his head as he tries to catch his breath. “I’m fine, I’m fine,” he manages to gasp out, wiping away the tears in his eyes. “You’re such a jerk, Killua.”
Killua only grins wider, enjoying the effect he has on his best friend. Not his best friend—his crush. “I’ll make it up to you,” He chuckles, feeling Gon’s arms once again wrap around Killua's waist, the touch sending shivers down the latter's spine. Killua tries his best to ignore the feeling, but it's difficult when he can feel Gon's warm breath on his neck and ears.
“You better make it up to me by buying me funnel cake, you meanie.” Gon snickers, placing his chin on Killua’s shoulder, a goofy grin on his face. “Anything for you,” Killua murmurs; anything to make you happy.
The two teenage boys sat there, indulging themselves in each other’s soft touch and the comforting silence of the calm evening. Killua realized that the sun had already gone halfway down, and the sky was now painted in a beautiful, vigorous shade of violet.
They were outside for half an hour. Damn, time flies when you’re having fun, huh?
“Okay,” Killua places both hands on the handles of his vehicle, “The helmets are in the back if you want to put one on for safety.”
“Why?” Gon laughs. Killua knows that mischievous laughter: Gon was about to say something stupid. “Don’t tell me you don’t know how to ride this thing.”
Killua scowls in annoyance; this little brat. Gon can’t help but laugh even harder at his reaction, Killua was just effortlessly funny sometimes.
“I’m gonna push you off.”
“Okay, okay,” Gon holds up his hands in surrender, still chuckling. “I’ll wear the helmet, no need to push me off.” He grasps the black helmet, putting it on his head, and Killua can’t help but glance over his shoulder, curious to see what it would look like. He thinks Gon might look cool, or maybe a little cute, but when he sees that it’s all crooked and placed on his head all weirdly, he can’t help but burst into laughter.
“This thing is hot,” Gon’s voice is muffled, “How do you breathe in this?”
“Gon,” Killua’s laughs are now full-on wheezes as he sees Gon painfully struggle to remove it, “You dumbass.”
He pulls up the sun visor, Gon’s cute little face coming into view. Killua’s eyes traced the soft contours of Gon's face, taking in the way his eyes crinkled when he smiled and the way his messy hair fell about his face. Despite the awkwardness of the helmet, Killua couldn't help but find Gon adorable.
He felt the urge to kiss him.
Killua’s cheeks flushed with warmth and he quickly looked away, trying to hide his reaction.
"You're one to talk, Killua," Gon teased, finally getting the helmet off his head and shaking out his hair. "You were laughing just as hard as I was."
Killua huffed in annoyance, but couldn't hide the smile that tugged at the corners of his lips. The teen shook his head and ran a veiny hand through his hair. "I wasn't laughing that hard," He muttered, trying to hide the fact that he was still grinning. “Yeah, yeah, whatever,” Gon mumbles, placing the helmet on the back of the passenger seat before glancing back at Killua with a toothy grin. “Can we go now?” He whines, “I don’t want to miss any of the rides, especially the rollercoaster.”
Killua chuckles, and nods. “Yeah, sorry.” He clears his throat, turning to face the front. Gon wraps his arms around his waist for the third time, pressing his cheek against Killua's back. He can feel the warmth of Gon's body against his own, and he can't help the way his heart starts racing.
For a moment, they sit in silence as Killua starts up the engine, the roar of the motorcycle filling the air. Gon's excitement is almost tangible, and that excitement grows when the silver-haired boy starts to drive, speeding toward the amusement park.
The cool breeze rushes past them as they swiftly weave through traffic, Killua deftly maneuvering the motorcycle with Gon clinging on tightly behind him.
As the wind brushes his face and hair, Gon can’t help but let out a whoop of excitement, his arms tightening around Killua's waist as they speed up. Killua can feel his adrenaline pumping through his veins, and he can't help but let out a laugh of his own.
Yet the excitement had come to an end when they met up with a large line of traffic.
“Damn it,” Killua swore under his breath as he slowed down, the motorcycle coming to a stop behind a long line of cars. Some of them honked impatiently, while others only stood there, waiting for the traffic to pass.
He couldn’t help but honk his own horn before yelling: “Hey, move out of the way!”
He was ignored, because some of the drivers flipped him off through their windows, others yelling: “Shut up!”
Some old lady dared to roll down her window and shout, "Watch where you're going, you reckless hooligans!" Killua grits his teeth in response, and he sent her the forbidden finger without hesitation, his eyes shooting daggers as he murderously glared at the annoying boomer. These fuckers!
Gon was disappointed but didn't say anything as they waited in silence for the traffic to clear up.
“Ugh, at this rate, we won’t make it on time,” Killua groans in annoyance, feeling as if his plans were ruined. He prepared everything, to make sure everything was perfect. Why didn’t he think of a situation like this!?
Gon glances around the street, the lights illuminating his face as a lightbulb flickered above his head. He leans close to Killua’s ear, quickly whispering, “Why don’t we take a shortcut? There’s an opening over there,” Gon points to a small dirt road off to the side of the main road, barely visible in the darkness.
Killua looked at it, and no matter how dangerous it seemed, a mischievous smirk formed on his lips. “You smartass.” He chuckles, gripping the handles of his motorcycle tightly. He glances back to keep tabs on Gon, yet his worries are washed away when he sees a goofy grin form on his lips. “You ready?”
Gon nods excitedly; he just wanted his damn funnel cake. “Yeah! Hit the brakes!”
Killua pulls on the brakes, and the bike slides as they take the sharp turn onto the dirt road. The tires kick up dirt and rocks as they speed down the narrow path. Gon’s laughter fills the air as they zoom past trees and bushes, narrowly avoiding rocks and potholes, the cold rapid breeze hitting their faces. As they reach the end of the dirt road, Killua pulls onto the main road. They can see the fairgrounds in the distance, illuminated by the bright lights of the rides and attractions.
“Woah..” Gon gapes in amazement, taking in the spectacle before him. “See, I told you it was worth it!" He exclaims, his grip tightening around Killua’s waist.
Killua rolls his eyes with a smirk, shaking his head. “Yeah, thanks to your genius shortcut,” He teases, but there’s a hint of gratitude in his voice.
Gon laughs a little, “Yeah- Oh, go, go go! The light just turned green!”
Killua can’t help but laugh at his impatience, secretly finding it endearing. As they zoomed off towards the carnival, the wind blew through their hair and they both laughed in glee.
This was going to be the best date ever.
