Chapter 1: Unfinished

Chapter Text

[As with all my stories, none of this writing is final and it is subject to change frequently!]

Medkit released a deeply exhausted sigh the second he trudged through the backdoor, the hefty bolt clicking shut behind him. It had been another immensely grueling day, and if anything, he wanted to drop every medical tool he owned and get some rest. Unfortunately, he didn't get that privilege, because something else caught his eye: blood, and lots of it. Spattered across the white kitchen tiles were thick smears of erratic crimson. It wasn't a chemical spill, as the strong odor of iron hit his nostrils almost physically. A frigid jolt of adrenaline shattered the fatigue.

His hand plunged for his revolver in an instant, fingers anxiously tightening around the handle. If his heart hadn't been hammering a few moments ago, it sure was now. His eye trailed up and stopped in its tracks, because Subspace was standing right there, blood ominously trickling down his clawed fingers and sleeves. Medkit swallowed carefully as he examined Subspace. Something was wrong, very wrong. It seemed normal...

Subspace's features were as regular as they could get, the hot pink rot creeping along his right arm and sprouting from where his left eye would've been. Even the little quirks Subspace owned, such as his posture constantly changing, his breathing often coming out ragged, and random twitching, were present. The appearance was identical in nearly every way viable, but the expression, though hard to read under the gas mask, was different. There was a menacing, unhinged glint in Subspace's eye, though it wasn't the same as the typical Subspace.

Subspace's centipede tail swayed slowly, serpent-like, before his eye narrowed, and he finally spoke, "Welcome back..." The voice was almost uncannily similar to Medkit's ruthless scientist friend—both raspy and mocking at once.

Medkit's eye followed the rich blood continuing to leak off the ends of his sleeves and clawed hands. What was worse than coming home to discover his lover soaked in blood? The fact that Subspace maintained eye contact the entire time, or the part that the red liquid didn't seem to be the scientist's blood? Medkit wasn't sure what unsettled him more. His hand remained firmly on his weapon.

"Subspace..." Medkit began cautiously, voice low, "...what did you do...?"
