   Summary

   When Arescius returns, there’s mud on her butt and leaves in her hair. Her expression is flat and her scythe, heavy in her palm, burns a cold that has never felt so foreign.

   Cherish finds her. The space between her eyes is wrinkled, eyebrows drawn low, lips swollen and the flesh gnawed. She looks at Arescius and waits, silent and still.

   “I’m here,” Arescius says, “and I will fight. You didn’t need to ask me.”

   Cherish smiles. It’s strained and doesn’t quite meet her eyes.

   They both ignore that Arescius’ doesn’t, either.
