Bronze narrows his eyes.
No one is supposed to be in the kitchen right now. He knows that with absolute certainty. Which means, if Chase’s ramblings about a particular villainess and his chocolate obsession are to be believed…
This must be Buddy.
Bronze clears his throat as he ventures forth into the room.
The reaction is immediate. The figure spins around like a kid caught with their hand in the cookie jar before dinner—eyes wide, fork frozen mid-air.
Bronze feels his face drop. It’s strange feeling skin and muscles contort instead of the usual stillness of metal—but the sensation barely registers. There’s something else, something far heavier beneath his bones, dragging through his chest like a boulder sinking in water.
He knows that face.
And he watches in slow motion as “Buddy” appears to be experiencing a similar emotion.

It just makes him seem so much more… human. So much more Chase. Chase Hollow, apparently, according to the nametag stuck on his backpack next to all of the star stickers.
And seeing Chase as a regular, kind-hearted, goofy, completely normal teenage boy—that was not supposed to happen. Nox is supposed to see Chase as the enemy—as the annoying human obstacle in the way of his plans.

And between near-death experiences, alien squirrels, and awkwardly intense eye contact, Chase starts to realize that maybe the real "glitch" in his adventure is the error in his own programming. Such strange heart flutters...

She solidified her theory that he was very ambitious, and also nervous of his superiors in Ex Libris. He was not trusting. He was defensive, but he was teaching himself to put up walls instead of casting arrows. He had a streak of playful insolence. He liked pretty things. He was a little afraid of the dark, but tried not to be. He prided himself on his knowledge and intelligence. He was happiest in the books.
He was also—and this, Violet could put together, was why he ever woke her in the first place—deeply, insatiably lonely.

Summary
If anyone were to turn the small town of Sugar Springs into the center of a media spectacle, it makes sense for that person to be Chase Hollow.
Everyone should be thanking him, really, for giving them all something new to talk about. Nothing interesting has happened in Sugar Springs in a while—not since the incident at the PTA bake sale a few months ago in which Diane Forenski not-so-subtly pushed Patricia Henderson’s carrot cake off her table before pretending to faint.
But even Chase has to admit: this is all a bit much—a huge step up from petty drama between feuding elders.
Everything unravelled when Chase made that fateful wish.

However, the wedding with princey doesn't go to plan when a giant storm attacks the ship... distracting Chase with a certain, obnoxious someone who gets swept overboard and requires saving.

When Chase learns of a sequel to 'The Princess and the Cat' (aka: 'that cat book where Buddy went meow'), he's not really interested. Until he learns that Mewcifer is once again the book's Villainess. Feeling guilty about laughing at Buddy going overboard in the original book, Chase decides the sequel would be a good way to apologise. Chase and Buddy just need to reprise their story character roles as the cats Toffee and Mewcifer and get along for a few days in order for Mewcifer to earn her very own Happy Ever After. Easy! Except… Buddy hasn't gone into the story with his usual full knowledge about the events in it. Instead, he's having to rely on Chase's guidance through the plot. There's one little detail Chase is reluctant to tell him, though. Deacon's copy of the book isn't the normal version for children. It's still a book about two enemy cats who learn to play nicely together, though. It couldn't possibly be too much for a Heroine and a Villainess to handle without any consequences like 'awkward conversations' or, worse, 'feelings'. Right?
