Summary
The most frustrating part about having Peter in her life, MJ comes to find, is that the memories don’t instantly return.
She's come to terms with the fact that she may never remember who Peter is. She grieves it for a while, stuck somewhere between the anger and acceptance for weeks as she watches Ned navigate through it all beside her.
But that doesn't mean she can't begin to forge a new friendship with him in the aftermath.

She gives a what-do-you-do sort of shrug, shoulders tight up near her ears. “Got in trouble in a bad part of town,” she says, clearing her throat when her voice breaks slightly. “You’re the only guys I know dumb enough to live in the bad part of town.”

It’s 3am when she finally arrives back to her apartment.
She opens the door, careful not to slam it shut for Ned’s sake but throws her keys on to the counter nosily. Her shoes are kicked off on her route towards the kitchen. She fills a glass up once with water, downs it then repeats, spinning to face the lounge as she nurses the second, only to be met with the sight of Peter Parker sat on her couch, blinking owlishly in the dark.

“Can I ask something about your—?” He chokes on the word.
“You can ask.”
“Does he treat you well?”
She blinks at him in surprise briefly before her face softens, her lashes fluttering as she nods. “He does,” she breathes. “He really does.”
Peter nods. It’s interesting, he’d thought it would hurt to hear that, but it doesn’t. Instead he feels a sense of…peace, almost. The pain still lingers beneath it, but there’s relief in knowing she’s adored. Even if it can’t be by him anymore. “Good. Good, I’m…I’m glad. You deserve—”
"And what about you?”
Peter frowns. “What…what about me?”
MJ shrugs. “Did they…treat you well?”
“Who?”
“The person whose perfume you’re wearing tonight.”
Oh, he’s gonna throw up. “No, what? No,” he laughs nervously. “No, this…” he gestures vaguely towards himself, “this is just something I’m trying out.”
MJ smirks as she ascends the steps to her apartment. “Okay, tiger.”
Tiger, he mouths as she disappears inside. That’s new. A smile twitches at his lips.
He thinks he likes it.

Summary
The thing about living in New York City is that everything is unpredictable.
MJ had grown up amidst the chaos of the Avengers. She felt as though the city was always in a constant state of rebuild, and there was never a zero percent chance they were under threat as long as at least one Avenger lived there.
News cycles were almost always interrupted by some sort of Avengers-level threat, or one of them causing chaos in at least one borough, and she’d grown used to it.
The evening Spider-Man is shot is the first time she remembers feeling like the entire city had come to a standstill.

Peter looks at her meaningfully but MJ ignores it– moving aside and waving her hand towards the door.

Peter limps back, MJ noticing the way he looks at her out of the corner of his eye and choosing to ignore the way her stomach flips as he does.

MJ really doesn’t know what she was thinking.
Asking Peter to move in with her in the interim seemed like an odd move at the time. She knew he didn’t live in a shack at least, but he’d mentioned his place needing some work, and the landlord had been eager to complete it. With the extra space now, she figured it was as good of a time as any to have Peter temporarily live with her so the landlord could do what he needed to do and everyone would be happy.
It was temporary, anyway. And even though she didn’t quite remember Peter, she knew that they had memories together, and Ned remembered him, so she felt safe. It also wouldn’t hurt to have him around in case she could remember him, too.

MJ asks Peter to live with her while Ned is away for work.

In the months after his parents passed and he’d moved in with May and Ben, Peter remembers them doing everything in their power to make things as special as possible for him. It was always simple, like letting him stay up late or making a special treat for the three of them to eat, but it made him feel like maybe it really would be okay, and losing his parents wasn’t the end of anything ever feeling happy again.
He wanted to be a good dad. He wanted to make May and Ben proud, but more than anything, he wanted Nora’s childhood to be as memorable as his was.
So, against better judgment, and knowing MJ probably won’t be incredibly thrilled by his idea, he decides that with no school the following day, tonight can be one of those nights.

“Gwen knows what she’s doing, right?” MJ questions him back with a frown and it’s another reminder that MJ is new to this circle. Her faith in Gwen stems from what she’s seen of Gwen’s work ethic and very little else. She wasn’t here for the time that Gwen Stacy decided she wanted to be a baker and that was why there was a mottled patch of cement on the kitchen ceiling.
Peter isn’t quite sure he has it within him to douse her optimism just yet, and Gwen’s patience with them all hovering in the kitchen and offering her no assistance is wearing thin.
