Summary
He peers between the branches at the spiderweb, gently pushing some away to get a better view. He wonders what kind of spider it is, if he can catch a glimpse of it. There aren’t that many types in England, but--
Oh. He doesn’t spot the spider, but there’s something else trapped in the middle of the web. A large moth, its wings splayed helpless and immobile. As he watches, he sees its legs wriggle ineffectually in the air. It’s a surprisingly pitiful sight, making Martin’s heart unexpectedly wrench a bit for the poor thing.

Martin saves a moth from a spider. He doubts that this decision will have any sort of serious repurcussions.

Summary
His eyes are at once dead and horribly, horribly alive. The milky film over his cornea does little to hush the luminous golden brown of his irises, huge around pupils so shrunken that Martin can hardly see them.
Jonathan Sims blinks. Then he frowns.
“Am I to take it you’ve never met a vampire, then?”
Oh, Martin is going to get a rubbish review.Or,
Struggling for income, Martin registers with an app that connects vampires with willing blood donors. His first client is not at all what he expected.

Summary
Jon wasn’t anything special. He was an ordinary researcher at Bright Eye Watchmen, Inc.; not terribly skilled at his job, and certainly not very likeable, but ordinary. He could be a bit too dedicated to unearthing the truth, at least if you listened to what Tim had to say about it, but Jon tried not to make a habit of doing that.
When Jon catches the attention of Elias Bouchard, head of the local research institute, he finds himself wishing he’d listened to Tim just a little more.
*
Bark-brown, leathery wings pulled away from the creature’s torso, briefly revealing six limbs clinging tightly to the tree trunk above. The eyes that stared down at the man were backlit by a deep, bloody red, except for the pupils. Those were white. Blank, wide, white orbs that watched him.
“What are you?” he whispered.
Jon didn’t know.

Summary
“Did Elias do this to you?” Peter asks him, watching the shifting of membranes as those black eyes blink. “It seems like a lot of work to go to, just to tie someone to you.”
Slowly — always slowly, as though he expects a punishment to come at any moment — Jonathan Sims shrugs. There’s the faintest of creases to his brow, confusion marring the numb blankness he has otherwise ensnared himself with.
“He hasn’t told you.” Peter clicks his tongue, pantomiming disappointment. “Of course not. He likes his secrets, doesn’t he?”
Peter looks after Elias' pet mermaid while he's away.
